It really is lovely having all our students back from school camp and being told different stories about what happened – especially their love for the giant swing! Welcome back year 3/4s!

Our students have been displaying their signs in remarkable ways while we focused on animal signs. They were encouraged to ask questions in signs such as ‘do you want to go and see the animals?’, ‘do you know where to find the turtles?’ or ‘there is a monkey in the classroom’. One student signed ‘I saw a hippo painting the classroom red and printing paper!’. While this may sound amusing, it highlights their ability to incorporate everything they have learned throughout semester one which includes finger-spelling, school items, colours and places around the school making meaningful connections in their signing.

I like to encourage this imaginative expressive as it helps reinforce their learning. These silly sentences demonstrate their comprehension of the signs they’ve acquired, further solidifying their understanding. Repetition is key to doing well and becoming more fluent over time.

To keep engagement high, board games were provided. These games not only offer a platform for fun and laughter but also promote teamwork, strategic thinking and social interaction. Deaf people often use eye contact when communicating to one another and these board games really do engage students with one another in a positive and inclusive way.
