Thornbury Primary School Mental Health and Wellbeing Update

Welcoming Vas Sgourakis to the wellbeing team this term. Vas will be working 1:1 and in small groups with students on Wednesdays and Fridays at TPS under the Mental Health in Primary Schools program and will be overseen by Anna Baker the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader.

Vas Sgourakis is a Master of Music Therapy Student currently studying at The University of Melbourne.

Music therapy involves the creative and purposeful uses of music to achieve non-musical goals. Music therapy aims to promote physical, emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing through a range of music-based methods, including music listening, song writing, improvisation, music and movement and guided music for relaxation.

Vas has previously worked alongside children, young people and their families in a range of settings, including schools, hospitals, disability care and community care settings.

Her approach to practice is collaborative and holistic. Vas adopts a strength based, child-centred and identity affirming approach with children and young people.

Vas is delighted to begin a three-month placement at Thornbury Primary School. Her hope is to positively impact the school community by working with children and school communities, using music as a way of helping individuals flourish in all aspects of life.
