The World Cup is here!
The World Cup in soccer is going to dominate the media and sporting world in the next few weeks. I have decided to focus on Soccer or Football as it’s called this term with most of the students and tap into some of the energy around the teams and to demonstrate the benefit of sport to young girls, LGBTI communities and anyone for that matter who are or might feel marginalised by boundaries in sport.
For me the good news is the round ball is easier to teach and it's also my background in sport, however my interest in cricket is back with the ashes and after the tennis yesterday I might be watching more late-night tennis!
Years 3-6s are training and have started trialling for events in the District Athletics Carnival in late August. I will be testing all the children in the following events:
Relays 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, Long Jump/Triple Jump, Shot Putt, Discus, Hurdles and High Jump.
Keith Howden an athletic coach from the Clifton Hill club spends time working with the running teams and basketball squad. If you don’t know Keith, we are very lucky to have the Australian champion work with the students on Basketball/Athletics at our school. As well as being 78 and the fastest runner in the school he is a wise and patient teacher, and the kids are learning a lot from his knowledge and skills. I have no doubt that Thornbury’s improved results at the carnival can be directly attributed to his professional coaching!
I would like to acknowledge that the process for choosing students for events is about participation. We limit the number of events students can do to 3 for example Relay,100m and discus. This is to encourage participation. Sometimes it just takes that one event to grab one child’s interest and they can then be actively involved in that sport for life.
I would like to invite anyone from the community who has a particular skill in sport to work with the children at our school. I am happy to have parents/carers coaches work with the children for sessions. Working with children card and a quick OHS Performa is all that is needed.
Lastly a few congratulations to the 5/6 Football Team, Cricket Team for qualifying for the next level of games from the district. A big shout out to Luca Prohasky in year 4 from Simons class who progressed to the State Championships in Cross Country. He finished 32nd amongst 80 runners which is a tremendous result. Next year I can’t wait to see how far he goes.
The PMP Perceptual Movement Program in the Multi will get under way for the Preps and lower grades. Parents might like to see their children in action in the multi on Mondays from 10.00am through to lunch. Check in with your child’s teacher if you would like to help on the stations or have some time to do yoga or movement with your child’s class.
Sport is a wonderfully joyful way to express yourself and I encourage parents/carers to find a local club or clubs that your child enjoys. It doesn’t have to be team it can be individual sports.
