Careers Update

As the semester draws to a close it certainly feels as though we are sliding into home plate.  There have been a lot of goings-on this term and especially at this tail end.  Work Experience has been the main focus for the term, as well as planning and preparation for the Secondary Pathways Expo, and planning for Term 3 with the Year 12s for VTAC applications.

Items in this newsletter include Year 10: Work Experience, VET: Term 3 Classes, Secondary Pathways Expo, Year 12: Term 3, and Mission Australia Youth Survey.

Year 10: Work Experience

This week the Year 10 cohort embarked on Work Experience.  There are a wide range of placements this year with students heading to Employers in education, childcare, food service, retail, automotive, building and construction, landscaping, engineering, land surveying, heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, nursing, aged care, design, photography, fitness, farming, animal care, maintenance and administration industries.

Teacher visits have been conducted in the early part of the week to check that students are in a safe working environment and not undertaking any activities that are not suitable for work experience arrangements.

At the end of the week students will be sent a work experience reflection survey to be completed prior to their return next term.  In the next newsletter (in term 3) I will share some of the feedback from students and some photos of students on their placements.

VET: Term 3 Classes

Not all Secondary Schools and Training Organisations have the three weeks of mid year break.  This means that VET Classes will recommence in the third week of BCC Student holidays - week commencing Monday 10th July.

All VET Students will be expected to attend normal VET classes during this week.   If you will be away and not able to attend or you are unwell, you will need to advise your absence to your course trainer (as per normal arrangement) and will need to email to advise me also.

As Bayside Christian College will be closed during this time, Trade Skills VET courses  (VET Agriculture and Kitchen Ops) and the VETA Morphus Peer meeting will not run.   These classes will commence in our first week back on the week of Monday 17th July.

This information has also been posted as an announcement in CANVAS - 2023 VET Students.

Mission Australia Youth Survey

Frankston City Council Youth Services and Mornington Peninsula Shire Youth Services are undertaking a new venture!

The Mission Australia Youth Survey is Australia’s largest annual survey of young people aged 15 to 19 years of age. With 18,800 respondents in 2022, the Youth Survey helps schools, community organisations, governments and policymakers to gain an understanding of young people’s values, concerns, challenges and ambitions.

Specifically, the survey enquires about socio demographic information; personal values; personal concerns about issues, such as: mental health, identity, alcohol and other drugs; concerns about bullying/emotional/domestic abuse; issues of national importance; as well as questions about wellbeing and sources of support, community connections, climate issues, housing and financial situation.

What is involved?

  • Young people aged 15 to 19 years complete an online questionnaire that takes approximately 20 minutes. Most questions require young people to check a box to indicate their response.
  • Please note responses are de-identified and cannot be traced back to a young person.

 Who is leading this?

Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston City Council have partnered to deliver the Mission Australia Survey to capture the voice of young people from across the region.

Data will be provided to participating schools and organisations to support the creation of more meaningful programs, access funding, provide support for local services and most importantly ensure services are meeting the needs of the young people in the community. A follow up information session hosted by Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston City Council will be provided to discuss key findings and results from the survey.

On Thursday 20 July from 4pm-7pm on North Campus we will be running our annual Subject Pathways Expo for all students entering Years 9-12 in 2024. Alumni News

Taylah Gaynor was a Bayside Christian College graduate and prefect of the class of 2014. Taylah was a valued member of our leadership team and community, often sharing her beautiful voice in assemblies. After graduating and many years of hard work and study, Taylah has been awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy for her thesis titled, ‘Characterising Cellular and Molecular Drivers of Adipose Tissue Dysfunction in a Model of Type 2 Diabetes.’

On behalf of the Bayside community, we say congratulations to Dr Taylah on her success and we pray God’s blessing on her future.

Student Spotlight

Pascal Veerman, a Year 12 VCE student, who started flying lessons at 16, has completed his first solo flight this past week after navigating through the necessary processes to get here.

Next on Pascal's checklist is sitting an exam to obtain his Recreational Pilot License (RPL), followed by accumulating flying hours independently. Then Pascal aims to get his Private Pilot License (PPL), with his ultimate goal being to become a Commercial Pilot, which he hopes to achieve through study when he leaves the College. Congratulations, Pascal, on your achievement on your first solo flight!
