Community Professions

Our final theme of learning for Term 2 has been learning about who in the community helps us and what jobs or professions do they do. To commence and understand the children’s prior knowledge, we asked them what they knew about their families jobs before introducing other ideas such as race car drivers, car washers, meteorologists, bakers, architects, zoo keepers, restaurant owners, gardeners, farmers, nurses, fire fighters, jewellery makers and fashion designers to name a few. Through play based activities the children interacted with new ideas and concepts.

To place emphasis on community interactions, the children have been drawing a picture of what they like to do with their families and it is being sent in the mail to understand the postal system. They are very excited to go to the letterbox and find their letters to give to their families next week.

Inventors

With the community donations we have received this term from staff and families, we set up an inventor station for the children to explore another profession. After reading a biblical story from Koorong of how a young child had so many ideas, she needed to pray for wisdom and courage to turn her ideas into one invention and came up with a school bus with her and her friends' ideas. This story helped instruct the children to create an object that currently doesn’t exist to their knowledge, or to invent something that one day might help them in a job. Using technology and books to research, the children learnt to create a plan, source materials and design their build. Music boxes, rocket ships, cars with triangular wheels, dog houses and spider webs were among some of the inventions the children worked throughout the week on.

Exploring jobs in the Bible

The children spent their devotional time, discussing jobs that appeared in the bible. Their insights were incredible to see the diverse books of the bible explored through their church and home lives and how they process and understand what helping people is truly about:

  • Elijah: Jesus died upon the cross.
  • Max: There was a kid who guided the sheep. Jesus healed all the sick people.
  • Olivia: Noah built the big boat.
  • Christian: There was a bakery guy. He was kind of cheap and then he stole a real sheep and got arrested.
  • Pearce: Jesus guided the sheep.
  • Xavier: soldiers arrested Jesus.
  • Azariah: Angels got Jesus out of the tomb.
  • Indie: Jesus made everyone not sick.

Bayside Staff Visits

The students are also visiting areas on the south campus and learning about the varied jobs across the college. On Wednesday 14 June the class visited the administration area, library, canteen and stopped by the Indonesian room. Thankyou to all the staff that stopped to say hello or supported a visit from us. It was a wonderful experience to collaborate with you, and teach the 4 year old class about the new areas they will be visiting next year.

Blessing Bags

The children joined in with Year 9 Service Week and assisted packing Blessing Bags for those less fortunate. The students had a wonderful time helping wth this community initiative.

3-Year-Old Kinder

We have been learning about the big animals that God has made through picture story books, discussions, inquiry-based play, arts and crafts, as well as sensory play. We continue to work on our gross motor skills and balance through our obstacle course with the elements of jumping on the trampoline, hoop jumping, crawling through the tunnel, stomping, star jumps and balancing heel to toe.

We had a visit from our buddy class: 3/4T. The Primary school children brought picture story books with them into the ELC to read to the ELC children. It was so lovely to see the familiar faces of big brothers and sisters, as well as meeting some new big buddies. We are looking forward to 3/4T coming to visit us again another time!

We also had a very special visit from 1/2J with Mrs Nadarajah and Ibu Newton. The children from 1/2J sang 'I can sing a rainbow' in Indonesian for the ELC children, whilst waving flags and props. The ELC children were given ribbons to wave in the air to join in with the actions. It was wonderful to have these special visitors come into the ELC!
