Year 7 Nihongo no hi (Japanese Day) 🏯

This year's Nihongo no hi (Japanese Day) was a bit different as instead of one day, it was broken up into two parts due to sickness. on Friday 26th May, the students experienced the amazing drumming of Wadaiko Rindo (who you may have seen at Richmond AFL games) and got to sample some sushi.

On the 13th June, we had all our classes participate in Japanese skipping and karaoke competitions and prizes were awarded for the competitions including a hiragana writing competition. The winners of this prize had to get 45 or 46 out of 46 in a writing competition in class.

It was a great day with judges including Craig O'Bree, John Lane and Melissa Casha judging the Karaoke which was won by 7F. There were many year 7 teachers participating in the skipping to help raise their class tally and the students really made an effort and had a great time exploring Japanese culture. Year 7 and 8 Lego League classes👷🏻‍♂️

Lego League classes have officially started this term.

It has been an exciting few weeks. Two teachers (Sharon Franks and Joseph Williams), supported by an assistant principal (John Lane) have managed to find like-minded students who are interested in coding and robotics for our first-ever dedicated timetabled class.

We started on Tuesday 13th June and had a year 8 team registered for Lego League competitions. The class is scheduled for once a week on Tuesdays, and it will be rotated throughout the day to not impact the same classes. Thank you to those students who have participated and enrolled so far. We are on the search for year 7 students to get a team going at this year level as well.

What is FLL? It is coding and robotics with Lego Spike Prime products. This aligns with Victorian Curriculum standards and has specific competition missions that need to be practised and completed. As we progress and build our knowledge together, it is important to realise that there is a competition in November for our registered team to compete against other local school teams. I am imagining this to be a very exciting day. If we win, we go on to a regional competition, then a state competition, then a country competition and finally an international competition. I am keeping my hopes high here. We do have very talented students already on the journey in year 8. We are ready for the year 7 students to come along on this journey too.
