Principal's Message

A message from our principal Craig O'Bree

Dear parents, carers, and students,

We have celebrated many student achievements over the past month at Sunbury College. I am so proud of how our students have excelled and shown great character, ambition, and resilience.

Each of our Year 7 students has made a positive transition from Primary School and their commitment to learning has been recognised. We had a significant number of our Year 7 students receive a Work Habit Award for their outstanding application to their studies this semester. Well done to all our year 7 students on an excellent start to Secondary School.

Mid-Year Instrumental Music Concert 🎸

Our school’s Instrumental Music Program provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn musical instruments, develop their skills and talents, and perform with peers in ensembles and bands. The Instrumental Music Program complements our classroom music programs, which include Year 8 Music (for all students), music elective at Year 9 and the VCE/VET Certificate III Music Industry (Performance) course at Year 10 and 11.

On Wednesday 31 May, our students performed in the Mid-Year Instrumental Music Concert. The MC for the evening was Year 12 student, River Jackson, who has made a significant contribution to our music program over the years. This concert was an incredible showcase of the talent and resilience of our students, with many students playing in front of an audience of family and friends for the first time.

Principal’s Awards 🏆

On Wednesday 21 June, it was an honour to hand out so many Principal’s Awards for exemplary Work Habits to students achieving a Work Habits average of 3.90 or above in front of 400 guests. Thank you to family and friends for coming and celebrating their success with us. There are many other students across the school who have made a significant improvement in their work habits, and while they weren’t recognised at the awards ceremony, this is still a significant achievement and each of these students should be proud of their improvement.

The Principal’s Awards recognises students with exemplary work habits at the end of each semester. Work Habits are a measure of 7 habits that allow students to learn to the best of their ability. Work habits are important for all students, no matter what subject or pathway they choose, as strong work habits lead to higher learning growth.

An analysis of the work habit averages of Year 12 VCE students in 2022 showed a clear trend, with students more likely to achieve higher learning outcomes and a higher ATAR, when they have a higher Work Habits score. See table below. Student application is measured on a 5-point scale - Never (0), Rarely (1), Sometimes (2), Usually (3) and Always (4).

ATAR RangeAverage Work Habits for each ATAR range in 2022
90 - 99.993.98
80 - 89.993.94
70 - 79.993.84
60 - 69.993.74
50 - 59.993.69

I wish all students, staff and families a safe and enjoyable winter break.
