Curriculum Overview Term 3
INITIALIT
InitiaLit–F is a comprehensive whole-class beginning reading and spelling program for all children in their first year of schooling. It includes an explicit and systematic synthetic phonics program as well as a literature component to enrich oral language, listening comprehension and vocabulary.
InitiaLit–F focuses on two main components:
- Phonics, to systematically and explicitly teach the basic alphabetic code in a set sequence. In addition to learning letter-sound correspondences and how these are applied to reading and spelling, children will be introduced to common morphemes and simple grammatical concepts.
- Vocabulary, oral language and listening comprehension through quality children’s literature. Detailed lessons, including writing tasks, are provided for each of the storybook titles selected for use with the program.

Reading
- Decoding skills
- ‘Tricky’ (common) words
- Comprehension
- Elements of a fiction story (character, setting, problem, solution)
Writing
- Recount
- Narrative (fairytales)
- Seed Writing
- Vocabulary and sentence structure
- Letter formation and handwriting
Spelling
- Words that contain the sounds already taught
- Tricky words
- Segmenting/Blending
- Rhyme
