Curriculum Overview Term 3

INITIALIT

InitiaLit–F is a comprehensive whole-class beginning reading and spelling program for all children in their first year of schooling. It includes an explicit and systematic synthetic phonics program as well as a literature component to enrich oral language, listening comprehension and vocabulary.

 

InitiaLit–F focuses on two main components:

  1. Phonics, to systematically and explicitly teach the basic alphabetic code in a set sequence. In addition to learning letter-sound correspondences and how these are applied to reading and spelling, children will be introduced to common morphemes and simple grammatical concepts.
  2. Vocabulary, oral language and listening comprehension through quality children’s literature. Detailed lessons, including writing tasks, are provided for each of the storybook titles selected for use with the program.

Term 3 focus includes:

Reading

  • Decoding skills
  • ‘Tricky’ (common) words
  • Comprehension 
  • Elements of a fiction story (character, setting, problem, solution)

Writing

  • Recount
  • Narrative (fairytales)
  • Seed Writing
  • Vocabulary and sentence structure 
  • Letter formation and handwriting

Spelling

  • Words that contain the sounds already taught 
  • Tricky words 
  • Segmenting/Blending 
  • Rhyme
