Cultural Day and Community Week

Every day Matters

Cultural Day

On the 2nd of June, Homestead held its much anticipated Cultural Day as students and staff members celebrated their backgrounds through a day of fun events. It was a spectacular demonstration of our community’s pride in diversity and words cannot express how splendid everyone looked in showing off their respective backgrounds. The day started with a ‘fashions on the field’ event where students and staff members proudly walked down the runway in their traditional attire. Then a cultural feast was prepared at lunch, followed by a showcase in which many talented students got to share their cultural dances and music with us all. Throughout the day, each of us were able to embrace our backgrounds and gain a better insight of the different cultures that surround us.

We’d like to express our appreciation to everyone who participated on the day. We’d like to recognise the efforts of Rebecca Collins for her ongoing guidance and support during the initial months of planning. She along with many of the teachers and staff were some of the key contributors towards the success of the event. We’d also like to acknowledge and thank the involvements of: Pat, Mitch, Kimberley, Natalie, Julie, Amy, Danijel, Vicky, Neena, Su, Padma, the media team and the VCEVM classes.

To our performers, we were all very proud of the beautiful performances each of you delivered. Despite some obstacles, we were amazed to see how you all persevered with your unwavering spirits and presented such a magnificent showcase of our community’s cultures. It is a shame that you couldn’t give your final bows to conclude the event, but the passion each of you directed towards your peers and performances, was more than enough to enhance our interpretation of ‘culture’ at the school.

To the entire Homestead Community, we’d like to thank you all for joining us in our celebration. Cultural Day couldn’t have been as vibrant as it was without all your time, support and collaboration. After the success of this year’s event, we hope that you look forward to next year’s cultural festivities!

Community Week

From the 29th of May to the 1st of June, our school held its very first ‘Community Week’ consisting of four days with continuous activities held for a $1 donation. Activities, such as dodgeball, touch rugby, chess tournaments, tug of war and many other events were aimed to cater to all aspects of students’ health and wellbeing. Our students demonstrated fierce competition and companionship, while also being sources of support for each other during the activities. It was an amazing opportunity to see participants unwind and have a good time, thus, further emphasising the importance of prioritising one’s health & wellbeing.

For the week, the student House Leaders also hosted the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’, in which many sweets and treats were sold for a gold coin donation. The funds raised from the activities, as well as the morning tea went towards Cancer Council Victoria. In efforts to extend our involvement and connection to the wider community, Homestead raised a total of$540.50 to fund cancer research and prevention programs. Cancer Council’s goal aligned with the purpose of our week to help improve the lives of cancer patients and advocate for early prevention.

We’d like to acknowledge and thank Ana Jovel’s guidance, dedication and abundance of ideas to shape the week into the hit that it was. We’d also like to appreciate the contributions of all members during the planning stages and the student and teacher House Leaders who helped bring the vision to life.
