Innovation thrives at Northcote

Congratulations to our Innovate Grant recipients
The inaugural round of grants for the Innovate Fund (part of Northcote Thrive) have recently been announced. The Innovate fund exists to support student and staff projects that use innovative ideas and will make a lasting impact on the Northcote High community. These grants are made possible through the generous donations of our parents, alumni and school community.
The Innovate fund panel, composed of School Council members, parents, staff and a student representative, were thrilled at the range and scope of the projects proposed. There were seven successful applicants, who received up to $300 each for their projects. They have up to 12 months to put their ideas in to action, but for many we think we will see the fruits of their effort before then. Over the coming editions of the newsletter, you will get to read about the projects and the groups' progress: we are starting with the Senior VCAL project as described below.
Congratulations to our grant recipients:
Senior VCAL class: Art project and School seating project (2 grants)
NHS Feminist Collective: Social media PSA advertising
NHS Book Club: Writer visit and workshop
Gamers Club: Purchase of a shared device to encourage new members
STEAM team: Purchase of Lego robotics kit
School of Student Leadership group: Outdoor Cinema fundraiser
We look forward to seeing the applications for the next round of grants, to be announced in Term 4. For more information about Thrive, or to make a donation, see https://www.nhs.vic.edu.au/about-us/thrive/
Senior VCAL Art Project
Who you are and the words that would best describe you as a group:
The Senior VCAL Class describes themselves as:
Fun, Tough, Hard-Working, Euphoric, Outgoing and Respectful
What is your project:
Our Project is to create a work of Art to commemorate the inaugural year of VCAL at NHS. This piece of art can then be hung in the back of our class.
Why do you think it will make a difference to Northcote High School?
This piece of art will show that the first year of VCAL has been a success. This will then raise the profile of the VCAL program and encourage other people to follow in our footsteps.
What are you excited about / looking forward to in this project?
We are excited about doing/designing the artwork, and adding our own touch to the space we work in. This also allows us to leave our mark on the school in the long run.
What do you think will be your biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge will be agreeing on the design and working out the best way of getting it completed.
How can people get involved / help you achieve your goal?
People could donate paint (bright colours would be appreciated) to support the project but otherwise we are completing this as a part of our class project.
Is there anything else we should know?
We look forward to sharing our piece of art with everyone and seeing the program continue to grow.
