Construction Immersion Day Friday 12 March

Building a Post and Rail Fence - Jackson Key

The Construction Immersion task for the day was to remove an old existing fence and replace it with a timber post and rail picket fence. We started the day preparing materials to take to site, packing tools into the trailer and tying off timber lengths stacked on the trade training ute to commence work. We set up the worksite by unpacking tools and equipment. String lines were set up to locate where the fence would run and mark out where the posts holes would be situated. Holes were dug at 250mm wide x 600mm deep, shovels were used to dig the post holes, including various other tools. 100mm x 75mm timber posts were used for the posts; we used an electric planer to dress the edges of the post. Posts were then placed into the holes plumbed using a spirit level and braced to pegs to keep the post in place, ready to be concreted in. A concrete mix of 1-part cement: 2 parts sand: 4 parts coarse aggregate was then mixed in a wheelbarrow, water was added to the mix to make our concrete. We then proceeded to fill the holes with concrete and recheck the posts for plumb using the spirit level. We used 100mm x 38mm treated pine timber for the fence rails; they were cut to length using the curricular saw, the electric planer was used to dress the edges of the rails. The rail heights were then marked out using a chalk line and fasten to the posts using 75mm galvanised baton screws. At the end of the day the site was cleaned and packed up, tools and equipment returned to the trailer.
