YEAR 7 SPORT - LIFESAVING

During all of Term 1, some of the students have participated in the Year 7 Sport - Lifesaving Program at Carrum Lifesaving Club.

The students have learnt many skills that can help them assess distress in and around the water.

They have also learnt and practiced lifesaving specific skills including board rescues, tube rescues, wading and beach running.  Patient assessment was also included where the students learnt how to assess a patient.

Jemma Harrison from Carrum Lifesaving Club has been so wonderful in the delivery of this program and she continues to make it engaging, educational, informative and fun!  Without her, the program wouldn’t exist and we thank her and the Carrum Lifesaving Club for their ongoing support of our program.

The weather was favourable with the wind being the only real problem on some of the days.

The students had a great time and were extremely thankful that we could use the local community and its facilities to learn important skills.

YEAR 8 BASEBALL -

Patterson River Wins Baseball.

On Wednesday 31st March the Year 8 Boys Baseball headed to play the sports group round robin.

The venue was FBC Robinsons Road.

The squad had been training for the last 3 weeks over lunchtimes and a team of 13 players took the diamond for PRSC.

GAME 1

The first game was against EMC and it was a close game for the first 2 innings. The EMC team were well coached on base-running and made some good plays in the field.

Joel Bouker led off the pitching with Jack Pierce catching. The infield of Jai Firth on 1st, Phoenix Simpfendorfer on second, Kaleb Morrison at Short Stop and Billy Thompson at 3rd base keep the pressure on the EMC batting line up. A couple of walks and a few errors saw EMC score 2 runs. Patterson River responded with hits to Tom Murphy, Phoenix, Ollie Gleeson and walks to Tarj McGuinness and Andrew McLean at the bottom of the 1st innings 2-2.

Joel continued his work on the mound pitching and Jack was very solid in the catchers spot behind the plate. Ground ball outs and a couple of catches kept EMC to 2 runs. We responded with some more patient batting and hits to Joel and Kaleb. 4-4 at the bottom of the 2nd.

The last innings and Kaleb Morrision took the mound, Joel on 1st and some sold infield work saw EMC sit back down in the dugout 5 players up, 2 hits no runs. 4-4.

At the bottom of the 3rd the batters got the green light to “hit away”. We were back at the top of the line up and all players played their part in team batting. Swinging only at strikes and aggressive base running to put the pressure on EMC infield to make the plays.

Joel beat the throw at first, stole 2nd &  3rd and scored on a wild pitch. The rest of the line-up in Lachlan Chambers, Tom Patterson, Ollie Gleeson, Billy Thompson, Jack Pierce and Tarj McGuinness worked hard when batting to get hits, walks or a great RBI for Andrew McLean.

Kaishu Yip was the 13 player who didn’t take the diamond but was great in support in the dugout and was very involved as a player and motivator.

PRSC 9 -5 Win

GAME 2

PRSC v Frankston HS

The maths were pretty simple here. Beat FHS and we go through to the next round. Draw with FHS and we go through to the next round as we scored more runs in the first game against EMC. Lose to FHS and we go home in 2nd place.

Win lose or draw they all played a part in a team game.

Kaleb Morrison took the mound for the first innings and did a great job. Many of the players had never played a game on a proper diamond so it was really pleasing to see the errors kept to a minimum. We stopped them stealing bases when we could and made some good plays at home, first and some fine catches in the infield.

Batting saw a double to Tom M, Pheonix S and solid hits to Jack, Billy, Tarj and Kaleb.

Score after the bottom of the 1st innings 2-2.

The game see-sawed along in the 2nd innings. Infield defence was very solid. Outs at 1st base and a bang-bang play from Tom M at Short Stop to Joel at 1st base was as good as you see on any diamond with the runner just out.  Some kaos play from a FHS player who took on the infield after a fielding error and Jack Pierce tagged the runner at the plate. Great awareness about where the ball was and what was happening on the diamond. FHS side away 1 run.

The bottom of the 2nd we scored 2 runs. Some great doubles (2 base hit) and some aggressive base running. Kaishu and Andrew made the pitcher throw to a full-count and stayed in the box to allow some base steals for our runners.

Score 4-3

Kaleb started pitching the final dig and after one walk and a hit was relieved by Joel. Kaleb went to first. FHS are always competitive and worked hard in their batting. An wild throw got a runner in a scoring position. One out and score is now level at 4-4.

Joel was great. Kept working on the batters, checked the runners on the bases to stop the steals. FHS got 2 hits. Ground ball out and a catch to the infield. The score is 4-4 with bases loaded and 2 outs.

I called a time out and had a conference on the mound with Joel. I suggested a change of pitcher but Joel pretty well said, “I’ve got this”.

Any hits and FHS win.

Joel pitched three unhittable pitches with the ball beating a swinging bat.

Time of game.

PRSC & FHS 4-4 Draw was enough for us to move into the next round of competition.

The efforts of all the players who took part in training and the games was great.

The next round is on April 29 and we will take to training in the first week back at school in Term 2.
