Dear Parents and Carers,
Here is what is happening in Specialist classes over the next two weeks.
Coming up in P.E:
Prep – Students have been engaged in their gymnastics unit of work and have been given the opportunity to develop different large, small based balances and rolls. They have linked their movements with animal actions.
Grade 1 – Students have participated in a range of gymnastics skills. They have been given the opportunity to create individual sequences on the floor and bench which have included a range of balances, rolls, jumps and linking movements.
Grade 2 – Students have participated in a range of gymnastics skills. They have been given the opportunity to create individual sequences and give peer feedback on their work. Sequences have included linking large and small based balances, rolls, jumps and different ways of travelling. Students have transferred their work on the floor onto the bench.
Grade 3 – Students have developed a range of skills in gymnastics. Students have been working with a partner to develop sequences on the floor which have included different ways of balancing, rolling, jumping and linking movements. Students have also had the opportunity to develop their sequences on the bench which have included different ways of moving along the bench varying speed and direction.
Grade 4 – Students have started their gymnastics unit of work. They have had the opportunity to develop sequence work with a partner and have linked movements together on the floor, varying levels, speed and direction. Students have been building individual bench routines which have included different ways of travelling jumps and balances.
Grade 5 – Students have started their gymnastics unit of work and have had the opportunity to develop partner/group balances. Students have included in their sequence work different partner balances, rolls, jumps, linking movements and have taking into account floor patterns and timing.
Grade 6 – Students have started their gymnastics unit of work and have had the opportunity to develop partner/group balances. Students have included in their sequence work different partner balances, rolls, jumps, linking movements and have taking into account floor patterns and timing. Students have been giving feedback to each other on their work as a means of improving their performances.
Coming up in French
Preps: Revising numbers 1-10 and identifying single words in a song.
Practising number song, words and actions to Bonjour song.
Grades 1&2: Revising and identifying numbers 1-20. Creating simple phrases using numbers, objects and colour words.
Grades 3&4: Starting to work on cultural projects: Identify key words in phrases to answer simple questions.
Grades 5: Starting to work on French scientist Project and research a famous French scientist. Identifying key words in questions.
Grade 6: are identifying key words in questions. Developing their cultural understandings of France and history.
Coming up in Visual Arts:
Prep - Working on fine motor skills such as folding, cutting, tracing templates to make collage based artworks. Discovering works of artists who use collage to make art.
Grade 1 - Creating a print from foam based on ideas from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Looking at rock art for inspiration for an artwork that tells a story.
Grade 2 - Students will be painting their observation drawings, and sculpting a 3D bug/insect out of clay.
Grade 3 - Students will be using watercolour paints to colour their collaborative drawings.
Grade 4 - Starting a new unit that focuses on digital art. Working collaboratively with a partner to make a storyboard for an animation that will focus on the theme of ‘helping others’.
Grade 5 - Students will explore Australian narrative art and start planning their own narrative artwork.
Grade 6- Students will start to sculpt a clay artwork that focuses on an aspect of their identity. Developing their clay modelling skills and following their plan made in previous lessons.
Coming up in Music
Prep: Students are learning to play lots of new percussion instruments this week. They are learning to maintain a steady beat and improvise simple rhythms to the beat in the song “who can play the instruments?”
Grade 1: Studentsare learning to differentiate between the beat and rhythm. They are learning the echo song “Welcome here today” and playing rhythmic ostinato patterns with body percussion and different instruments. We are beginning to introduce symbolic notation and visually recognise simple rhythmic patterns.!
Grade 3: Students are learning the ukulele this term, with a focus on developing good strumming techniques, maintaining a steady beat and keeping in time with one another. We have started learning how to tune the ukulele and our first chord of C major!
Coming up in Drama:
Grade 3 & 4: Students are currently learning about stage directions and exploring the importance of these in a script. We are discussing how the lines tell the performers what to say, but the stage directions tell them what to do or how to do it. For example, how many different ways can the line “Hello” be delivered?
Grade 5 & 6: Students have been exploring Foley Art – the art of sound effects, and conducting inquiries into how these are used to enhance a story during audio plays, theatre performances and digital productions. Students in grade 6 attended the production of ‘Mamma Mia’ performed by Firbank Grammar and Brighton Grammar students. They then reflected on the design aspects of the performance in class, including costumes, make up, lighting, sound, set design, props and use of space.
