Year 10 Media Excursion to ACMI

On the 4th of May, Mr Harber, Mr Ericksen & the fantastic Year 10 Media class headed to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).  The goal of the day was for students to find inspiration to use in their own upcoming group films.

Upon entry, all students were given a ‘Lens’, a circular disc with a NFT microchip in it.  Any exhibits, videos, games, articles or photos students interacted with, they could scan their Lens.  After leaving ACMI, anything that has been scanned, is saved into an online profile which can be accessed at a later day.

Students learned about slow-motion, stop-motion and the origins of film.  Exhibits allow students to see the importance of pre-production tasks, such as storyboarding and scriptwriting.  The exhibition covers a vast wealth of Australian culture including Bluey, Mad Max and Effie.

After an enjoyable morning, students battled occasional drizzle to practice their filmmaking techniques by the Yarra River, the Birrarung Marr Park and Hosier Lane.  The day was filled with inspiration that students can apply to their own upcoming films.

VCE Media Excursion

On the 28th of April the VCE Media class headed to Federation Square.  At the newly-renovated Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), students attended a TopScreens – Meet the Filmmakers session.  Students watched the 16 best short films, music videos and animation from across Victoria.  The production quality which students achieved in COVID Lockdown was impressive.  After viewing these videos, a panel session was held with four of these filmmakers, and the VCAA Media Assessor.

The filmmakers included : Tadji Ulrich (The Final Thought), Flynt Robbins (Yellow), Miki Flett (Space Cadet) and Elle Vanden Boom (In My Dreams) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-02iokQQN-E

The panel were able to give our students some valuable insights to the production process for VCE Media.  Finally, our class made our way into ACMI’s revamped ‘Story of the Moving Image’ exhibit to search for inspiration to use in their own films.
