Respectful Relationships & Consent Workshops

On the 30th of April and the 7th of May, our Year 12 students participated in two workshops which explored Respectful Relationships & Consent. For the first week, students were in small groups, and learned about the legalities of consent & sexual assault. A range of videos, helped to spark conversation about how to give and identify consent - Freely Given, Reversible, Informed, Enthusiastic, Specific. Next, students read and discussed hypothetical situations to identify if consent is required, and if so, whether consent was given.

In the second workshop, students were divided by gender. After recapping last week’s content, students discussed some ‘Relationship Ground Rules’ and what is acceptable in a relationship. The womens’ workshop then examined the language used in online dating. The men’s workshop examined and society’s traditional expectations of men with their own beliefs. Both groups then learned about domestic abuse and how to seek help. All students should be commended for their maturity, honesty and candour during these workshops.

Feedback from students:

  • It was a good idea to talk more informatively about this, and is a necessity for students of our age to go through.
  • The respectful relationships course was great I found it really informative and I learned a lot from both the legal side and moral side of this topic/issue. I'm glad we were given places where we can look for help. Overall a good, compact course.
