VCAL UPDATE

Year 11 VCAL Update:

Connor Sheedy and Lachlan Lawry VCAL (Year 11 Students)

On Monday 26th April the Year 11 VCAL students visited Lysterfield Park to go mountain bike riding and hiking. This excursion was linked with our Personal Development class and addressed the outcomes of teamwork and communication plus linking in with the content in class. The mountain bike riding was excellent because it gave us an opportunity to get into the community and apply our knowledge of teamwork. The hike was great because we had the opportunity to see plenty of wildlife including kangaroos and joeys. We’re looking forward to more of these activities in the future. I participated in giving feedback to this excursion to make improvements for next year and increase student voice in VCAL.

We followed up the next day and went to 1000 steps and Tree Surfing. The 1000 steps was challenging and gave us the opportunity to be active and push ourselves. Everyone made it to the top! We liked the environment as the air was fresh. This linked in with our Literacy work on the ANZACs and it was interesting to read the information along the way. Tree Surfing was good and was a fun way of finishing off our two days of excursions. We enjoyed Tree Surfing because it was different and like the 1000 steps, gave us the chance to challenge ourselves in a different way. There were lots of laughs had throughout the day and we loved the chance to spend time outside the classroom with our mates.

Year 12 VCAL update:

Leonie Evans and Declann Aiton Year 12 VCAL Student

On Thursday 29th April, the Year 12 VCAL students visited the Jewish Holocaust Museum. We had been studying the Holocaust as part of our Literacy unit. We met at Frankston station at around 7:30am and took the train to Caulfield. We walked from station to the pop up Jewish Holocaust Museum. The day tarted with a presentation with frontloading terms that we would hear throughout the day and established prior knowledge. We then broke off into classes and were given artifacts with a criteria sheet to help us identify what they were. Our group had a book of goodbye messages and an ID metal bracelet. We had the opportunity to watch a testimony from a Holocaust survivor named Sarah and then she spoke to us on Zoom. We enjoyed the day because it was interesting to hear her story and learn more about the Holocaust. The excursion humanised the content that we had been learning in class. It was shocking and made us realise how devastating history can be.
