Pathways to success

INTERVIEW WITH BOB FROM ANTARCTICA

By Carla Azzopardi (Year 10)

On the third of May 2021, my fellow peers and I had the delight of interviewing Bob, who worked in Antarctica from 1982 - 1994. We did this as part of our Year 10 Pathways to Success class (PTS).

Bob shared his experience with our class with a smile on his face. Bob described the weather, the work he had physically done, the problems with climate change and the battle of being isolated away from everything. I was lucky enough to interview Bob, his fantastic sense of humour and lovable personality shined through the screen of the educational video we created. This video is currently being edited, so we can show it to other PTS classes and Bob can inspire even more students at EMC.

Bob worked in both the summer and winter, where he assisted as a carpenter. Bob shared his happy memories from his work, mentioning the strong friendships that were created, the incredible scenery and challenges he faced. He also told us about the wonderful animals he saw down there, including Emperor Penguins, Killer Whales and seals.

If you were in the room with Bob while I was interviewing him talking, you would see the smile slowly take over Bob’s face as he spoke about the bonds and friendships created while he was in Antarctica, “all you have down there is your friends, you were always helping each other out. “– Bob

Bob’s story kept students engaged throughout the whole session and left them amazed. Working in Antarctica is truly an awesome thing (Bob recommended this to my peers as a future career).

It was an honour interviewing Bob, and this is an experience me and my class will never forget. We all left our PTS class feeling inspired.
