Principal Introduction

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

This week the College held one of its curriculum days. We had two core priorities for this day.

  1. Further embedding the literacy skills and strategies across our curriculum
  2. Launching the Shape EMC 2030 initiative with staff.

Literacy

Our staff have been building their skills and knowledge in every subject area to effectively build subject specific literacies in students. Working on vocabulary, front loading strategies to ensure that all students are able to access the curriculum and experience success in their learning.

I encourage you to discuss with students the changes that we are expecting to see in teacher practice and inquire into the strategies of:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Front loading
  • EMC notes
  • Think Alouds
  • Morphology - teaching word parts

Each week I discuss the importance and value of establishing a reading routine that builds the capacity of your child to read for sustained periods. Reading is the gateway to success in life and as parents we all need to consider strategies to support reading development at home. As a parent, I am fully aware of the challenges that we face trying to over power the attraction of mobile devices, interactive gaming and of course television. Taking time out to discover what your child enjoys reading and making a commitment to reading with them and even role modelling by reading to them is a great way to start to engage children with text and build a better and brighter future for them.

SHAPE EMC2030

The second part of our day involved the Shape EMC2030 strategy - where we are creating a clear vision for the future and 10 year strategic plan. Community engagement in this process is being sought to ensure that we understanding of the dreams and aspirations for our College. You are involved to participate in this opportunity....

NAPLAN

Next week (10-14 May) we will head into the NAPLAN assessment period. It is really important that all students participate and do their very best in this assessment to assist the College in understanding where our strengths are, and where the opportunities for improvement exist. I hope that you can take a few minutes to discuss with your child the value in being your best and making sure that they apply themselves to the NAPLAN assessments.

The data that we collect will inform future changes to curriculum, allocation of funding for intervention strategies and support for students who have not demonstrated the expected learning growth.

Finally, I would like to wish all the mums in our community a wonderful Mothers' Day on Sunday.

Kind regards,
