Year 7 Assembly - Reflection on Term 1

On Wednesday, 21 April, Year 7 students gathered to reflect on their first term at Secondary School.

We began by talking about the importance of attendance and we celebrated our 49 attendance legends who had 100% attendance in term 1!

We then reminded ourselves about the college expectations for behaviour in the classroom and the yard to make sure that we’re starting term 2 on good footing. Everyone was reminded about the importance of bringing the correct equipment to class, being in the correct uniform and not using chewing gum at school. We also spoke about how important being part of a positive and supportive community is and that every person in the college is part of forming good culture. Every person can have a positive impact; make a commitment to help make this the best year 7 ever!

Our attention turned towards some upcoming events and there was high excitement for languages week, the upcoming athletics carnival, Year 7 round robin sports and the upcoming music camp.

We then celebrated students who had gone above and beyond in demonstrating the college values during term 1. This included congratulating our swimming and cross country age group champions and all participants and winners of our incredible geography cake competition.

In term 1 nearly half of the cohort received at least one merit point. That is incredible!! We held a raffle and some lucky merit recipients received a prize! Students who received 2 or more were then eligible to receive a school values award. I had a really tricky time selecting only 8 winners as there were lots of worthy recipients.  Congratulations to our term 1 school values award recipients:

Respect Award:

  • Misk A-H. 7D
  • Hana A. 7I

Responsibility Award:

  • Daisy B. 7A
  • Alexander P-J.7E

Team Work Award:

  • Eden M. 7F
  • Chloe L. 7A

Resilience Award:

  • Hendrix E. 7A
  • Zoe Z. 7I

Thank you to all year 7s who’ve navigated starting secondary school so brilliantly. It’s great to see our young people building connections with their teachers and classmates – year 7 is a time to connect! Thanks also to students who put some great suggestions into the ‘lunchtime activities’ suggestion box – our engagement wellbeing team is taking them on board to organise some more lunchtime events! Looking forward to a great term 2.

DiSCovery Class - Harmony week activities

In DiSCovery we have been looking at the importance of Harmony Day! We have created people that represent our individual cultures, heritages and identities.

We have enjoyed doing this task as it gave us a chance to explore our classmates' cultural differences.

We also love how Ms Chiappa has put the paper people up in the DiSCovery class for everyone to see and enjoy.

NAPLAN Testing

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2021 for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday, 11 Wednesday, 12 and Thursday, 13 May 2021. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student learning outcomes.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the school. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal Form. These forms are available at the school.

Later in the year, you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.

For more information about the NAPLAN tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au.
