The Importance of Routines

Routines provide us with structure and a level of certainty as we navigate our daily activities. Our ability to design and stick to a routine each day can support productivity, happiness and fulfilling our true potential.

Here are some of the reasons why we should support our children to design and follow a set daily routine:

  1. Routines help reduce stress and facilitate relaxation
  2. Routines help us achieve goals
  3. Routines help us keep track of success
  4. Routines make us more efficient
  5. Routines reduce our need to plan
  6. Routines create Structure in our lives
  7. Routines save time
  8. Routines instil good habits
  9. Routines break bad habits
  10. Routines help us become more proficient
  11. Routines help us get the most important jobs done
  12. Routines reduce procrastination
  13. Routines build momentum through repetition
  14. Routines build self-confidence
  15. Routines can save money

Routines take the guesswork and uncertainty out of bits of our day, this allows individuals to feel more in control and less stressed.

CREATING A ROUTINE

Write down everything you do each day over the course of a week. See what you can cut or reduce. Then see what you can set as a normal routine, something you do at set times each day or week. It has to work with your daily activities. For example, if you stay up late, getting up early may not work as part of your routine.

Once you have designed your routine, try it for a while until it starts to become second nature. If something in your routine does not work – change it.

FIVE SIMPLE ROUTINES FOR SUCCESS AT SCHOOL

  1. Plan as a family
  2. Encourage your child to write down school assignments daily
  3. Set aside time to do homework
  4. Set aside a time each week to clean and organise
  5. Pack up at night, not in the morning

One of the most important things that a parent can do to ensure school success is pretty basic: make sure that your child is getting enough sleep and eating balanced meals. This will help them to stay focused and improve their ability to retain the material they have learned. If this doesn’t happen, all of the work on these other routines will be a waste of time.

STAY SAFE IN WET WEATHER

As the weather gets colder and wetter, now is a good time to remind everyone to take extra care of our services. Bus floors and surfaces may be wet, and the roads can be slippery. To stay safe, students should move down the bus and take a seat if they can. If a seat is not available, students should hold on to grab rails or poles in case a bus needs to brake suddenly.

Pressing the bell early to give our drivers enough time to stop safely and waiting until the bus comes to a complete stop before moving towards the door will also help students stay safe when travelling on our services.

REMEMBER TO TOUCH ON YOUR MYKI

Students must travel with a valid Myki when travelling on our services. We are no longer accepting cash on board, so students should top up their Myki before travelling. Students are encouraged to register their Myki. This may help with COVID-19 contact tracing and ensures the balance is protected if the card is lost or stolen.

Touching on means that students are accurately counted on our services and help the Department of Transport plan school services.

PLEASE WEAR A MASK

While COVID-19 restrictions are easing, masks remain mandatory on all public transport services for students above the age of 12. Our buses are thoroughly cleaned each day to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect students.

Stay safe,
