What's happening in our classrooms

Grade 1

So far this year, we have been working really hard in all our subjects and have learnt many new things and had a lot of fun along the way!

Reading

We have been practising reading independently using a range of strategies to read tricky words. Some of these strategies include ‘Eagle Eye’, ‘Chunky Monkey’ and ‘Stretchy Snake’. We have also been learning about how to make good predictions before and during reading, using clues we find in the text. We are currently learning about making connections between a text and our own lives.

Writing

We have been using hands-on experiences to inspire our writing and build our vocabulary. Some of these fun experiences include making pancakes, visiting the chickens and making playdough. We have been writing recounts of our experiences, practising using time connectives and emotion words.

Numeracy

So far this year, we have learnt a lot about two-digit numbers and place value. We have practised reading, writing, ordering and modelling two-digit numbers in many different ways, such as bundling using icy-pole sticks and using base ten to show tens and ones.

Inquiry

This term, we are learning about different environments and will be investigating how a range of animals live and survive in that environment. We will be linking our inquiry with our writing by conducting research to create information reports about a chosen animal.
