Magis report

The John XXIII Public speaking Competition heats have been held this week and continue in week 2.  Multiple heats have been needed in most year groups.  Year 12 Magis students have been doing a wonderful job chairing and adjudicating debates, and special thanks also to Ms Farley, Mrs Holmes and Ms Dawson for adjudicating multiple heats.  The top three speakers from each year group will compete in the Grand Final on Tuesday 4 May at 6.30pm in the GBLT.  Grand finalists will be notified next week as soon as heats are completed.

Interschool Debating continues at Christ Church Grammar School next Tuesday evening, 27 April.  Good luck to all teams and warmest thanks to coaches and managers.  A reminder to all competitors to wear school winter uniform and make sure you are at the venue 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start. The information sheet for next Tuesday can be accessed below.

Conditions for membership of the Magis program have been reviewed and modified, and a new Magis  list compiled for all years.  In addition to the MYAT Testing,  academic results at each year level are now being considered, as some of our top academic students were not named as Magis students because they either failed to gain the high scores required in the MYAT test done in Year 6, or they did not do the test. The new Magis list now includes all students who have excelled academically, as well as those already designated as Magis students from the MYAT testing.  Some students originally listed as Magis are no longer on the list as a result of  their academic performances whilst others who joined via the Altiora strand are now recognised as Magis students if their involvement in the program has been excellent. Students do not need to apply – those on the list are now all recognised as Magis students and all new members may collect their Magis badge from the Magis office. The program will continue to offer some special opportunities to Magis students but the majority of our competitions, special programs and house challenges are open to all John XXIII students.

John XXIII College competed very creditably in the Da Vinci Decathlon held at Winthrop Hall in the final week of term one. Twenty five top colleges and high schools competed,  and the College won top three placings in four disciplines, including a splendid win in the Year 9 Creative Producers section.  See the pictorial report attached which also includes the list of wonderful coaches who assisted.
