Middle School

From the Head of Middle School

At the recent ANZAC Day ceremonies it was great to see some of our boarding students attending their local service representing GSG. The pictures below show Darcy Barrett (Year Ten) and Austin Brown (Year Nine) laying a wreath at the Jerramungup service.

At this week’s assembly Mrs Franklin reminded students about the procedures around mobile phones at school. The simple version is that students cannot use their phones during the school day, between 8.30am and 3.10pm. They should be on silent or turned off and placed in school bags in their locker.

If a student needs to contact home, they can use the school phone or they can ask for permission from the Middle School office, where they may be allowed to use their own phone while at the office.

Mobile phones can be a major distraction at school. When they “ping” with an incoming message, it is difficult to resist the temptation to look at the message. We need students to be concentrating in class, not worried about a message coming in, or what they will send at the next break in the school day.

Phones cannot be used in bathrooms as this contravenes privacy for all students. Students do not want to go to the bathroom only to have others on their phones, they want their own privacy while going to the toilet. Taking photos or videos just increases the anxiety for students or bystanders who see it as the wrong thing to do. As per our school procedures phones will be confiscated from students who breach these rules.
