Walk to School

What a way to start the day!  This morning we enjoyed our Walk to School day for Term Two, in the glorious sunshine.  With a strong turn out, and a mirror finish on Oyster Harbour, students and parents enjoyed the walk through the trees, followed by Milo and muffins outside the Library.  The best bit?  It's all in the name of a great cause.

Our Walk to School Day this week brings together two initiatives.  The first is Your Move, a program to support families to find more active ways to get around so you can spend less time in the car and more time doing the things you really enjoy.  By participating, we earn points for rewards like bike racks and tyre pumps.  This week is also the celebration of Walk Safely to School Day, which encourages us to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.  It also aims to:

  • promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
  • reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
  • reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
  • reduce the level of traffic congestion.
