Term 2 in the Careers Context

The days have quickly become shorter and it’s tempting to start doing indoor activities. This makes it a good time to focus on researching some of the options available to you, either for your further studies or in other contexts. This applies to all of us, no matter what stage of our career. For students in Years 9 and 10, decisions you make now will influence how your Senior Years program will develop. For students in Years 11 and 12, decisions you make this year may have a major effect on what you do when you leave NHS.

Term 2 is also a good time to calendar in all the various Open Days coming up in Term 3, and to investigate any smaller-scale activities being run by tertiary institutions. For example, Monash will soon release dates for their subject-specific seminar series, and vocationally-focused institutions will run taster days over the next few months.

The winter months can also be good for finding and embarking on some community work or volunteering. Or maybe it’s time for a new hobby or co-curricular activity as our clubs menu expands. Many of these options have positive side effects in their own right, as they can help to develop new skills and confidence, or expose you to new friendships and insight. In addition, they have value for the future work place as they help with the development of many of the skills now being expected of prospective employees. Many unis are also starting to recognise community involvement and leadership, and will reward efforts in these areas with a lower ATAR requirement.

Please spend some time exploring the Careers Page on myNorthcoteHigh as a springboard for your research, and make sure you keep an eye on our daily bulletins for opportunities as they arise.

Work Experience at the NGV – Year 9 Families

No, that is not a typo. Year 9 families are encouraged to start thinking about work experience in Year 9 already, as many good placements, such as this one, are advertised and finalised over a year in advance. https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/about/people-and-careers/join-the-team/work-experience/

Applications for the NGV work experience placements in 2019 open in May. Currently our preferred date for work experience is during the NAPLAN week in May, but we can be flexible to accommodate opportunities such as this one. Talk to Kylie Witt or your YLPL if interested.

Future Frontiers Analytical Report: The Future of Work in Australia

Some recent work done at the University of Melbourne is a reminder to all of us that, even though the world of work is changing fast and many traditional jobs are being automated, our young people have many exciting opportunities ahead of them.

Professor Peter Gahan and his team from the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Workplace Leadership have been exploring the impact of technology on the global and Australian labour force, and have made the following findings:

  • Despite a technological paradigm shift, more jobs are currently being transformed than destroyed
  • Predictions of widespread job destruction could be overstated, and many studies don’t take job creation or transformation into account.
  • Changes to the distribution of jobs have been less pronounced in Australia than elsewhere
  • Australia has not experienced the same ‘hollowing out’ of middle-income jobs that has been observed in other OECD countries such as the US.
  • Despite ongoing change within jobs towards more non-routine tasks, there has not been the same scale of increased income inequality seen in many developed countries.
  • The Australian labour force participation rate has been more resilient, potentially because of higher levels of education.
  • Uniquely human skills will be of the greatest value in the future labour market
  • It is true that routine tasks – regardless of the level of cognition involved – are being performed by machines leaving non-routine tasks to be performed by humans (for now). This could be viewed as a positive shift, as it potentially allows for more fulfilling tasks to be made available to the humans.
  • Competence in performing non-routine jobs may best prepare workers for the global labour market.
