Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning

Hands on Learning (HoL) is resuming at Mornington Secondary College in 2022. The program is designed to allow secondary school students to participate one day per week in various practical projects, both within the school and in the local community.

The program will be run by two staff members, George Atrache and Sebastian Beck, and up to 10 students from years 7 – 10 will participate each day the program runs (Wednesday – Friday). Students will spend an entire day in HoL over the course of the school week, and as well as completing practical projects they will also regularly prepare and share meals together as a group, helping to form strong social connections with each other. The ability to foster a sense of connection and growth across our young people will see them thrive and develop in confidence whilst tackling various challenges.

HoL has been implemented as an active engagement strategy, allowing access to a wide choice of curriculum that students would not otherwise have the scope to participate in. The program is designed to provide an alternative to traditional classroom structure and learning styles, where new skills can be learnt by doing and experiencing. Students will focus on identifying and realising their strengths and full potential, with a focus on transferring these skills into the classroom to allow them to achieve success across multiple domains.

Commencement projects include implementing a Wetlands area that can be utilised by the wider local community and working in partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire and the Environmental Education and Outdoor Education departments within the school community. Students will also focus on ensuring that they re-build and restore the HoL space to make it an accessible and enjoyable area for the wider school community. Projects will include creating a working and sustainable produce garden, re-planting native species and bushland, and restoring the woodfire pizza oven and outdoor entertainment area.

Enrolment has already commenced for our Semester 1 intake, however if you are interested in accessing the program for your child, or would like to learn more about our program, please do not hesitate to contact George Atrache or Sebastian Beck using the below details.
