Selamat tinggal!

Four fantastic weeks in and things are looking good in the Independence Centre!

In Writing this week, students have utilised their performing arts skills to help them understand how to “show” with descriptions rather than “telling” their audience what is happening with actions. This can be a tricky process to transfer from acting and discussing to our writing but in the end it is worth it to help us write interesting and imaginative stories that capture our audience's attention.

In Reading, we are focusing on reading strategies good readers use before, during and after reading to help understand what they are reading and justify their thinking. To begin we have focused on our predicting skills. Most of us are very strong at predicting based on the cover, title and beginning of texts but often forget this is a strategy we can actively use during and even after reading to help us to understand and clarify our thinking about what we have read. Predicting and a good simple strategy we can use as we read each day.

In Mathematics, we continue to challenge ourselves with our growing place value knowledge. This week has seen students working to rename numbers, record numbers in expanded form, and use number lines to order and compare numbers. Throughout this work, each student has been working with numbers that are a challenge for them as identified by themselves, in their personal goals and our recent assessment.

As a science focus this week, students have discussed the features of living things and begun researching and describing life on earth. Through this we hope to develop a deeper understanding of living things, the different needs and adaptations of living things, and how humans use common features to help sort and classify living things.

As always, thank you for your support and thanks to all of our 3/4 students for their efforts this past week.

We hope you all have a brilliant week!
