Leadership Centre

Curriculum

Halo semuanya - hello everyone!

Another busy and fun week in the Leadership Centre as we begin our first Literature Circle Rotation, cooked tomato pasta, starting Spelling Groups, a Big Write and to top it off we completed some Essential Assessment!

In Reading sessions, students worked in their Book Club groups rotating through four activities that focused on their inferential and evaluative skills when thinking about their

texts. During Guided Reading sessions, students explored Metalanguage, Subjective and Objective views and Literary Devices. Students discussed the importance of analysing visual and written texts such as articles and why evaluative comprehension is an integral part of reading.

Throughout Writing last week, students began the Writing Process which will continue over a two-week block. There has been a big focus on Tightening Tension and including the 5 + 1 senses within writing pieces to further engage the reader. Last week students had their first ‘Home Talk’ which can be found on SeeSaw. This Home Talk is really important and assists students with their ideas for the Big Write the following day. The topic for the Big Write was “You should visit..” It was great reading over favourite destinations and holiday memories as students persuaded their readers why they should travel to that place! In the following session, they self-assessed their writing by using the VCOP Criterion Scale and created a new Writing Goal.

In Mathematics, students completed pre-tests for Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Teachers will use this information to plan and cater for future lessons and small groups. In the other sessions, students began looking at Time, calculating elapsed time, reading different analogue clocks, converting between 12 and 24 hours and reading timetables. Next week students will work on two ‘Fermi Problems’ to practise the mathematics skill of problem-solving in a team. They will then work with others to plan their End of Year Excursion showcasing all their understanding of time, timetables and budgets. Watch this space!

In Wellbeing sessions this week, students discussed the importance of self-care and using a template as a guide, created their own ‘Self Care Plan’. They identified “Warning Flags” or triggers that empty their jug and also identified ways they care for themselves emotionally, physically and people who can assist them when at school. These are currently on display in each classroom and on SeeSaw to act as a reminder of how important it is to look after yourself and practise self-care daily.

Year Five students will have the opportunity to write to a scientist as part of the Monash University pen pal program. Permission forms went home on Friday, and the program will take place during Leadership Hour when Year Six students are undertaking leadership responsibilities. This program aims to engage students in the STEM fields and provides students with an opportunity to ask questions, and change any misconceptions they may have of scientists! Later in the year, we may even have an opportunity to see some of their research and experiments on Zoom!

Today the Year 5 and 6 students have their ‘Leadership Day’ where they will work with others to develop and think about their contributions as a leader this year. The Year 6 Teams will be given time to work and brainstorm ideas with each other and create a goal for the term. We hope there is lots to share this afternoon!

Before you go, here are some happy snaps from 5/6 Sport! Can you guess all the sports?

Wishing you all a wonderful week,

Mrs Brisbane, Miss Walker, Miss Campbell, Ms Bennetts, Mr Burrill and Mr Dix
