Focus on Learning

Introducing: Literacy Learning Hubs

One of our new initiatives we have established this year is our 'Literacy Learning Hubs' program. Literacy Learning Hubs is a dedicated 40 minute literacy session that runs Monday through to Thursday each week for students in Kindergarten to Year 4. These Hubs are an additional literacy session, timetabled into our school day on top of our already established English block. During these Hubs, students are not grouped in their regular classrooms, but rather, grouped in ‘hubs’ that reflect their current learning needs. These small groups allow for students to not only be grouped across year levels, but also across stages if needed, allowing our educators to deliver even more targeted and explicit literacy lessons at the need of the individual students.

Students participate in their Hubs straight after recess. This timing has been chosen strategically as it is well researched that physical activity can improve mental alertness and cognitive function. Moving into our Hubs straight after recess, where our students have eaten, spent time outdoors in the fresh air and have been physically active, will enable our students to think more clearly and have greater focus, thus furthering their ability for academic growth and success.

Whilst we already pride ourselves on our small class sizes, we are extremely fortunate and excited that the introduction of these Hubs mean that our 50 Students from Kindergarten to Year 4 can be split into even smaller, more dedicated groups. In fact, into 7 groups!

Our Literacy Learning Hub teachers for 2022 are:

  • Miss Pilgrim: PreLit/InitiaLit Foundation
  • Mrs Meade: InitiaLit 1
  • Mrs Hofman: InitiaLit 2
  • Mrs Wilson and Mrs Rheinberger: Super Spellers and Ready Readers
  • Mrs Gamble: MiniLit
  • Mrs DarnellL MiniLit
  • Miss Allan: MiniLit

As a school dedicated to improving the academic growth of all students, we are very excited to begin our Literacy Learning Hubs and look forward to prioritising even more time to the teaching and learning of reading, writing and spelling. As the year progresses, we will keep you informed of these Hubs and share results of student growth and achievement.
