Year 7

Mentone and Bentleigh

After much anticipation

Our Year 7s have had a positive start to their secondary school journey. It has been fantastic to experience the energy of so many students that are happy to be back at school.

Orientation day featured a scavenger hunt where students searched the campus for clues and explored their way around the school, some time to meet their Homeroom teacher and peers as well as a few games of Downball in the junior yard.

The first few weeks have been jam-packed with new friends, a variety of interesting classes and adjusting to the demands of high school. Below are a few words extracted from a reflection students wrote during Religion class.

On the first day of Year 7 I really enjoyed it but I was a bit nervous. We saw new people and other people that we haven’t seen since last year. When we had our lunch we got a soft drink, freckle, a packet of chips and a two square ball. Before we left, we got our laptops and saw how cool they were. Soon after that we went home.

The first week of Year 7 I was feeling kinda great because I made friends and knew where some places are around the school. The subjects were ok, and the teachers were great because they were fluent and explained the work really well. The only terrible thing was that I got homework on the first day and that felt like a disaster because I haven’t got homework since 2020, so it felt like the world ended. But I’ll get used to it one day.

My dad drove up Dixon street approaching the entrance, I was nervous and excited at the same time. When I walked in, I was very intimidated by the older kids and looked for some familiar faces. My first few days were decent, I was not used to high school life, and I was still getting used to it. After the first day I took the train and from that day on I started catching it everyday. My favourite subjects so far is Indonesian, drama and sport. I have been playing 4 square with my mates but I would like to do some other sports and activities during lunchtime. All my teachers are pretty good, some better than others. I like the high school timetable a lot more it has more subjects I like and that I enjoy.

My first week of year 7 was so much fun. I made so much new friends and not just year 7s even older grades. I got to meet up with some old friends and I have been buying my lunch which has tasted super good. Playing 4 square with mates every snack and hanging out with some older grades at lunch has been a lot of fun. I have been working well with my school work getting all my homework done and getting in front in class. The teachers have been really nice and my Indonesian teacher is so funny and is my favourite.

On my first day I was really excited to meet new people and start a journey at my new school. At the start of the day, we got our locks for our locker, and I struggled trying to open it it took me a few days until I got used to opening it but my friends helped me when I was having trouble. I was really excited to meet new people and teachers and it was really good getting to know my classmates and teachers. Overall, my first day was fun and exciting and it was a great start to my journey at St Bede’s

Start of the Year

Beginning secondary school is a very important time in a person’s life and I see my role together with you as parents and the rest of the St Bede’s College community to make your sons transition from primary school to secondary school as smooth and as stress free as we possibly can. The boys should be commended on the way in which they have settled into the first few weeks of the school year.

As parents I am sure you are aware of how important your presence is to your son’s education. Your continued support of your sons will be appreciated not only by them but by our staff. As teachers, we become a lot more effective if we have the support of you as parents and work together in partnership.

Your son’s homeroom teacher will be extremely important this year. If you have any concerns about how your son is settling in, then they should be your first point of contact. The homeroom teachers will be the first teacher that sees your son each day and will teach them for at least one subject.

Our staff are here to foster independence and maturity in these young men. We have an expectation that all students immerse themselves in school life via curricular and co-curricular activities.

We understand the importance of communicating with staff. I’d like to take this time to advise you on who you should be reaching out to when requiring or relaying information. For pastoral/administrative matters your primary contact is your son’s homeroom teacher. For major pastoral matters you may contact myself or Justin Shepherd (Campus Student Coordinator).

For academic and co-curricular matters your primary contact is your son’s direct teacher. They are best equipped to provide you feedback on their progress. The best mode of communication is email, as many of our staff will be teaching throughout the day. However, you may leave a voice message on a teacher’s direct phone line.

I look forward to working with you throughout 2022 and beyond.
