Meet Your Senior School Captains

Want to learn more about our illustrious school leaders? Our Senior School Captains took a 5-minute break to share their approach and aspirations for their leadership role in 2022.

left to right: Zachary, Elina, Kelly & Victoria

What inspired you to become our College Captain?

I have always enjoyed being a part of the SRC and helping others around the school and in our community, so naturally I was drawn to being a college captain.

-Victoria

I was inspired by the people I knew I could work with. It’s really an amazing group with tons of drive, compassion, and love for the school. So, I was super keen to work alongside like-minded people who really want to make an impact.

- Kelly

I wanted to become a College Captain so I could give back to the Doncaster Secondary College community and contribute to building a safe, positive, and supportive body of staff and students.

- Elina

I was driven to apply for a role as a College Captain as I wanted to have the ability to improve the lives of students as they progress through their high school years, as well as promoting student voice and agency through my involvement in the SRC.

- Zachary

What is one quality a good leader needs to have?

I believe that a good leader needs to be able to take initiative and put effort into achieving their goals. It is one thing to have an idea, but that idea can’t become a reality unless you take that extra step to do something about it.

- Victoria

I think empathy is really important because we never really know everyone’s situation, and being a good leader is to be someone who listens, understands others and tries to make decisions for the greater good.

- Kelly

One quality a good leader needs to have is the ability to empathise with others and have the intention and capacity to actively listen.

- Elina

I believe that a key quality needed to be a good leader is the ability to listen well and process what is being said. This helps to inform decisions and allows the best course of action to be taken, even in a period of stress.

- Zachary

What do you hope to accomplish in your role as School Captain? Or What job (as School Captain) are you most excited to undertake in 2022?

I’m excited to work on the goals that the SRC have been working on such as building school pride and empowering students to be active and engaged in what they learn in class.

- Victoria

The SRC has some big goals this year regarding sustainability, learning partnerships, school curriculum and school pride. So, I’m super excited to work on these goals and hopefully accomplish as much as we can.

- Kelly

I am really looking forward to working with the SRC towards achieving some of our goals – particularly to inspire more school pride in our community. We’ll hopefully be able to achieve this by incorporating more student voice as well as organising more whole-school and house activities, etc.

- Elina

As a College Captain in 2022, I am very keen to promote the benefits of student voice and broaden student involvement across the school. At the end of the day, the students are the primary focus of the college and have the ability to assist in the development and implementation of school processes and events.

- Zachary

Describe the most enjoyable aspect of being part of Doncaster Secondary College.

It was lovely to meet such wonderful people that I could build life-long connections with and learning things that I have an interest in.

- Victoria

I think the most enjoyable aspect of DSC is the opportunities that it provides, such as interschool sports, the music program and debate club. I also think programs such as MYSELF was really fun as it is unique and offers many valuable electives to choose from.

- Kelly

The most enjoyable aspect of being part of Doncaster Secondary College is the close relationships and lifelong memories we get to make
each day.

- Elina

I feel that at Doncaster Secondary College, there is a wide variety of people with a large range of interests, which means that everyone can feel welcome. This is also applicable to the number of different activities offered at DSC, therefore there is something for every student to be involved in.

- Zachary

Finally, what is something your fellow students might not know about you?

I enjoy spending my free time playing video games, especially FPS games.

- Victoria

I think people may not know that I was born in Tasmania, and moved to Melbourne in 2010 when I was in prep.

- Kelly

I’m a singer and dancer and am currently performing in musical theatre shows.

- Elina

I am left-handed and I have played electric bass for over 9 years, as well as being an almost completely self-taught guitarist.

Let's show our community some r-e-s-p-e-c-t!

Often there is quite a bit of negative behaviour taking place on local public transport. As the SRC, we'd like to respectfully remind everybody in our school community that how they behave on public transport reflects upon the school and can damage our image and affect other community members.

Behaviours such as vaping, swinging on structures designed for people's safety, putting people's health at risk by not wearing masks properly and ripping off the public transport system by not touching on with Mykis, are actually illegal and make our school look bad, as well as having negative consequences for the wider community.

Respect is a key school value, and it is important to respect other public transport users, the public transport system and our school's image. It is unfortunate to see this take place and community members have actually complained to the school about their experiences. One public transport user was particularly unhappy with the behaviour of our students, and here's what she had to say,

When I hear bad language and see students not wearing masks, it makes me feel quite unsafe. Sometimes I have young children with me, which makes it worse still.  Please ask the young adults at your school to be more respectful of others when they're out in our community.

We ask all community members to think about how they behave on public transport and to consider how this affects our community.
