Music Matters

Year 7 Recruitment

We are very excited to welcome the large number of year 7s who have taken on the fantastic opportunity to learn an instrument at school this year. We have a great balance of students playing a wide range of instruments including: Flute, Clarinets, Oboe, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Percussion, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Electric Bass and Guitar. Most have had at least their first lesson and the instrumental staff are very impressed by the enthusiasm and capabilities of the students taking on this wonderful challenge.

If you would still like to participate in the instrumental program, please come and see Mr Dean or Mrs Howes in the Music Centre office any day of the school week. We still have vacancies on Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon Trombone and French Horn.

Those who have tried an instrument and have a letter of offer, please return your enrolment forms and make your levy payment as soon as possible.

Year 7 Turbo Days

  • Soundworks - Tuesday 15th March
  • Stringworks –  Wednesday 16th March

After the huge success of our Turbo Day last year, we are running two separate Turbo Days.

Tuesday 15th March will be a day of music to turbo charge those who will be in Soundworks. This is our Junior Concert Band which includes flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, euphoniums, electric bass guitars and percussion.

Wednesday 16th March, will be dedicated to Stringworks. This is our Junior String Orchestra and includes any students learning violin, viola, cello and double bass.

Both days will be a chance for the students to get to know the other Year 7 Soundworks and Stringworks students and learn the basic skills of playing together in a band. There will be music games, small group lessons and whole band rehearsals throughout the day. A pizza lunch will be provided and the day will conclude with a concert during period 4 to their Year 7 peers and teachers in the Performance Centre.

The event is free and will be appearing on Compass shortly. Please get your consent in as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on this great chance to turbo boost your learning on your new instrument.

Victorian Opera opportunity

After a successful inaugural season, Montsalvat and Victorian Opera come together once again in 2022 to present a semi-staged production of The Magic Pudding – The Opera as part of their Community Youth Project.

Singers aged 15-25 are invited to audition for a solo or chorus role to form the cast of this production. Successful applicants will perform alongside professional singers and work closely with Victorian Opera’s music staff and artistic teams on the beautiful grounds at Montsalvat.

Taking place during Term 2 school holidays, this program will commence on Monday 27 June and conclude with performances on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July.

Auditions will be held in the Barn Gallery, Montsalvat on Monday 28 and Wednesday 30 March. Audition registrations are now open and will close Friday 11 March

This is a wonderful opportunity for young singers looking to work with a professional performing arts company and to learn from those active in the industry.
