80th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin

Congratulations to Jordan Moll for the initiative and work he did in Week 4 of term to raise the College community's awareness of the ‘80th Anniversary of the bombing of Darwin’. Many members of the community are unaware that Australia was actually bombed during World War II. Jordan enhanced resources that were put together by the Darwin Defenders group putting together a video the students watched in their humanities classes or during the Senior meeting time raising their awareness of what happened in Darwin and other parts of Northern Australia at that time.

You can watch Jordan's video here.

The 19th of February 2022 represented the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, which took place in 1942. As you can view for yourself in the video, this attack remains the largest and most deadly attack in our nation’s history. Approximately 250 people were killed and several hundred wounded. I felt that it was vital for us as a school community and as Australians to commemorate this day due to its significance on our nation.

With it being 80 years since this devastating attack, we can look and appreciate how Australia now stands as a safe and stable nation, not under any significant threat, all thanks to those who served in uniform in response to this attack. I wanted to make others aware of this anniversary as I feel it isn’t spoken about enough in Australian society. Even speaking to people I know in preparation for making this video, they knew very little about the events that took place 80 years ago.

I decided to take the lead in commemorating this day for several reasons, including the fact that a family member of mine served in uniform and was in Darwin at the time of these devastating attacks. I also wanted to educate and inform people about what happened in Darwin as I feel it is imperative that this history is remembered and we never forget those who were lost 80 years ago.

International Woman’s Day

International Woman’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias

Imagine a gender equal world.
A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Together we can forge women's equality.
Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Doncaster Secondary College recognizes this day and on Wednesday March 8th, our Wellbeing Placement Students will have songs about empowering women played as we make our way to classes. Also keep an eye out for posters around the College and on the TV screens promoting the day.

We are also excited that the wonderful Carla Troiano, one of our alumni is being featured in Women of Soul - a soul powerhouse for International Women’s Day at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Backed by their all-female band and fronted by the finest voices in soul, their performance at Elisabeth Murdoch Hall will celebrate the power of women on International Women’s Day. In the promotional material, they say that:

Carla Troiano embodies the essence of soul music and oozes confidence and effervescence in the spotlight.

Carla is also currently writing her debut solo album.
