Leadership is a topic that attracts great attention, and rightly so. Leaders have impact and influence in our lives, be it formally or informally, directly or indirectly. A book I read recently described leadership in a way that resonates well for a school setting, ‘leaders foster an environment that supports and inspires others to be their very best’. I feel this captures the elements of a school that are aspirational, shared with people who are supportive and inspiring. We come together to learn and grow as people, to belong to something special, to support each other in our endeavours and celebrate our successes. This doesn’t happen by accident of course, we mindfully cultivate this, each of us leading by example and our formal leadership holders ‘fostering an environment that supports and inspires others to be their very best’.

At Great Southern Grammar we value leadership, and the learning of leadership at all levels. Our core school values underpin the elements of leadership we wish to cultivate in our young people, and exhibit in all that we do. The four school values:

  • Integrity
  • Respect
  • Compassion
  • Commitment

When speaking with the newly inducted Junior School House Leaders, we discussed our four school values and decided to profile Integrity and Compassion with our community first. When asked to put these values in their own words, our leaders said:

  • ‘Integrity is saying what you mean, and meaning what you say’
  • ‘Integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is looking’
  • ‘Having integrity means that people trust and respect you because they can rely on you to follow through with what you say you’re going to do’.
  • ‘Showing compassion is to care for others and support them’
  • ‘Being compassionate is being kind’
  • ‘Helping others is how we can show compassion’

I look forward to working with our Junior School House Leaders in 2022, they have already demonstrated a great desire to make a positive impact on our school community and I am confident they will promote the school values and inspire their Junior School peers to be their very best.

Parent Information Evening

Tomorrow, Friday 11 February, we have re-imagined the Parent Information evening event in response to recent Government announcement around COVID-19 protocols preventing on-campus gatherings. Our alternative is to provide pre-recorded videos and make them available for families to view on Friday afternoon.

As per the original plan, there will be a whole of Junior School video first, introducing staff and talking through general information relevant to all families across the school. Then each classroom teacher will provide a short video to introduce themselves and talk through items specifically related to their class/cohort. Session notes and slide decks will also be made available to families via the MyGSG Junior School Information document section.

This year, recordings and summary notes will be provided for as many events and activities as practicable. Throughout the year if you have any difficulties accessing this information please make contact with either myself or your child's classroom teacher so we can provide further support.
