Teen Mental Health First Aid Year Ten

I am proud to inform you that the teen Mental Health First Aid Training will occur this term for Year Ten students, as part of their Health Education course. During Week One, letters were sent to parents and carers, and to students, explaining the aims and expected outcomes of GSG offering this course. Mr Paul Donaldson has embedded this TeenMHFA course into the timetable for all Year Ten Students to participate in this most valuable skill building programme. Using current research, varied teaching methods and a warm, open classroom environment, students learn how to notice and support their peers who might be struggling. This training offers an approach which helps students to have a discussion with their friend and to link them with an adult, as well as providing them with local and online support agencies and networks.

You would probably know by now that MHFA is an international organisation, in 25 countries, driven by current research that offers courses for adults, adolescents, community groups and such like, with the aims of reducing stigma, sadly still reflected in limited, extant beliefs about and language around mental health problems, and increasing and normalising help-seeking behaviours. In the few years since GSG has been TeenMHFA training Years Eight and Ten students, the effectiveness of the course has been proven within our education space as many more young people are seeking help, clarification and support, for others and themselves. Indeed, I believe that mental health literacy is gradually being strengthened both locally and beyond as a direct result of this important training.

Online Safety

The recently released report from the eSafety Commissioner Mind the gap: Parental awareness of children’s exposure to risk online may interest you. Some intriguing findings emerged from this report such as the finding that there are significant gaps in parents’ knowledge of their 8 to 17 year old’s online activity, and that young people are seeking information of physical and mental health online. Overwhelmingly, the study found that digital parenting needs to evolve as children grow so that young people are well prepared to respond safely to harmful online content.

Lastly, and in a timely fashion following the e-safety report, 8 February was 'Safer Internet Day'. Below are some further links and infographics on the topic.
