Around the School

RSC Virtual Arts Exhibition 2021

In the last issue of the newsletter (Issue 12) we sent you on a scavenger hunt searching for the RSC logo’s within the RSC Online Arts Exhibition. How many did you find?  For Junior School there were 10, Middle School had 7 and in Senior School there were which is a total of 26 combined RSC logo’s.

The exhibition was a great success with over 4,500+ views of students work across the three galleries. Students produced quality works across the exhibition and it was difficult to choose a cover poster design but ultimately talented Sheryn Woo’s artwork was chosen for the exhibition poster.

Duke of Edinburgh – Mt Stirling Camp

Our DOE students were fortunate enough to undertake both their camps this year, despite the ebb and flow of COVID restrictions. Wednesday morning saw our Duke students, accompanied by 8 staff members, head to Mount Stirling to complete a 3-day hike in what was forecast to be rather unsavoury weather conditions.

We enjoyed a quick stop at Mansfield for morning tea before the group alighted at Telephone Box Junction and strapped on their heavy packs for the first leg of the hike. Both the weather and the incline were fairly forgiving, with the last few kilometres to our first camping base being a sleek downhill run. After a few initial hiccups involving miscounted poles and vanishing items, the students popped up their colourful tents and busied themselves with cooking, card games and conversations.

The weather the following morning demanded our resilience and respect, as freezing temperatures, consistent drizzle, splatters of sleet, and numbing winds took their toll on the group’s morale. By midday, our fingers could barely unbuckle our pack clips as we huddled in GGS Hut for a break. Here, Ms Usher assessed the situation and redirected our plans for the afternoon walk to ensure that the weather did not completely dampen our spirits (as it had our clothes).

A reroute, an early tent set-up, and an hour break for lunch by a roaring fire revived the group for most thrilling part of the hike: the ascent to Craig’s Hut, perched atop Mt Stirling. Students were able to complete this 10km loop without their packs, thanks to Ms Usher’s quick replanning, making the mud underfoot and the steep terrain much more manageable – but a few students still went sliding! Many of us opted to sport garbage bin bags for this part of the trek in effort to ward off the wet and cold, demonstrating high levels of resourcefulness and giving us all a laugh.

Students struggled to navigate on their final day, despite their maps and hints from staff, so we were all treated to some extra kilometres on our last morning as the group backtracked once or twice and hesitated at each junction. Nevertheless, their determination to finish the hike (and get on the bus!) meant we still made it to Telephone Box Junction in good time, soaking up the welcome sunshine and feeling tired but fulfilled.

Well done to our DOE students who have now had sufficient expedition experience to complete their Bronze award; you have battled it out in 2 wet weather camps and worked hard on your other components, and everyone in the College community is so proud of you. A massive thank you to Ms Usher and Ms Aveling for their leadership and unwavering support throughout 2021, and thank you to Mr Vlahos, Miss Horton, Mr Godfrey, Mr Ingleton, Miss Woollard and Miss Lee for volunteering their time for this camp.
