Year 12 Captains' Report

As we reach the halfway mark of Term 2, the Year 12 students have had a busy term so far. We commemorated ANZAC Day with a whole school assembly - lead by the student leaders.

The Year 12 students also attended a Science seminar where the Science teachers introduced them to their next practical investigation SAC.

Arts Camp also took place, where all VCE Arts students had a three day camp where they worked on their area of interest and had a lot of fun.

In celebration of our hundredth year, following the whole school photo on the oval, LHS had our Open Day which featured our new mural, as well as student led tours and activities.

Last Friday we had our Year 12 photo taken...Class of 2019!

We also have some exciting events happening in the coming weeks, 'Funky Socks Friday/Friday breakfast' occurring every week.

We would like to wish all Year 12 students good luck with their upcoming SAC’s and for the remaining weeks of Term 2.  In the final two weeks or so, Unit 4 will commence, marking the beginning of our final semester of high school.

Year 11 Captains' Report

It’s that time of the term where SACS just keep on piling up and exams are just around the corner.  As the wise Oprah Winfrey once said:

“You get a SAC, you get a SAC, you get a SAC and you get exams!” … or something along those lines.

Hopefully everyone has had a look at the exam timetable  on Compass or on the Year 11 Google Classroom.  And, to all the Year 12s who don’t have midterm exams......you lucky human beings!

On a lighter note, a few weeks ago on Sunday May 19, the amazing Year 11 Presentation Ball was held.  It was a beautiful evening and all debutantes presented themselves wonderfully. We all worked really hard, both students and teachers, to prepare for this one night and it most definitely was worth it all. It does seem a bit heartbreaking that after all this preparation and practice, it can all be over after just one night, but we’re sure everyone really did enjoy themselves. It was a night where all of us could look our best and of course take hundreds of photos.

From a guest point of view, it was amazing to see everyone having a fabulous time on the dance floor singing and dancing their hearts out. It made all the time and effort so worth it.  As a side note, for those who did do deb practice every Tuesday afternoon, congratulations, you now have your Tuesdays free again!

On that very same weekend, the Centenary Open Day was held. A big thank you to both students, guests and teachers who participated in preparing for this day, especially the SRC who helped prepare the barbecue, the teachers who set up the Key Learning Areas and to those who set up the decade feature rooms.

Some of you may have also noticed a new feature wall within the hallway opposite the techies, if not, hopefully you have a chance to look at it, and are able to see a little glimpse of our school’s long and rich history.

Many of our school’s alumni came and visited during the Open Day, both young and old and it was an eye-opening experience to see them reminisce and recount how the school used to be in the past; like how the canteen used to be at the top of the school and you walked through the building!  It is crazy that our school has stood against the test of time with so many features remaining and we hope that it continues to do so, well into the future.

Tickets for the School Production 'Aida' are also out!  Everyone is invited to have a look, with tickets available to purchase from the school website homepage.  A lot of effort has gone into preparing for this show by students and teachers and we hope that everyone has the chance to come and enjoy it. More details about the show and sneak peaks to come, in the following weeks.

VCE Music and Drama Performances were held on Tuesday 28 May and the VCE Drama Ensemble  Performances, Thursday 30 May.  It was an awesome opportunity to get to watch our peers perform in groups with all their unique interpretations.

More recently, it was Reconciliation Week and we started it off with a flag raising ceremony to acknowledge and respect our Indigenous Australians and their culture, to promote reconciliation. Reconciliation Week is a week that allows Australians to acknowledge our past and the mistakes made and to embrace our nation’s multiculturalism. At the heart of it all, Reconciliation Week is a call for action to establish a well built relationship based on trust and truth between our indigenous people, Torres-Strait Islander people and the wider Australian community.  In lieu of this, our school has pledged to help better the lives of our indigenous people and Torres-Strait Islanders, and to pay respect to them and their beliefs, whether this be through how we teach within our curriculum or acknowledging them within each of our assemblies. We hope that this day will be a step forward to reconciliation and that everyone can take this opportunity to learn more about the rich history of Australia.

VCE GAT

The General Achievement Test (GAT) is approaching this term. This will take place on Wednesday 12 June.

The GAT is a test of general knowledge and skills in: Written Communication, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Humanities, the Arts and Social Sciences.

All students completing a Units 3 & 4 subject will need to complete the GAT, even if they completed the GAT in 2018 as well.

On Wednesday 29 May, students across Years 11 and 12 attended GAT preparation sessions where they had the opportunity to learn key strategies and skills that they can apply when completing a range of tasks in the GAT.

Funky Socks Friday and Year 12 Breakfasts

Year 12 students have been wearing their funky socks on Fridays this term, raising gold coin donations for charities.

The Year 12 breakfasts are also continuing on Fridays in the VCE kitchen area from 8 am to 8.25 am.

Year 11 Exam Period

Year 11 Exams commence, Friday 7 June with English and English Language exams first.

The exam timetable has been posted on the Year 11 Google Classroom.

Students who have a clash with their exams, will need to visit the VCE Office to complete an exam clash form ASAP.

Year 12

End of Year Exams

A timetable has been published on the VCAA website for the Year 12 End of Year Examinations.   The timetable is accessible to students on the following link:

VCE Points

All students in Year 11 and 12 are reminded to see their Home Group teachers or a VCE Coordinator to update their points tally for 2019.

VCE students gain points for all sorts of reasons; academic achievement, social service, music, sports, leadership, etc. You are then recognised for this at awards ceremonies, being presented with the relevant badge.

Year 11 Presentation Ball

On Sunday 19 May, a number of Year 11 students participated in the Presentation Ball at The Crown Palladium.

A great deal of effort had gone into learning the dances and preparing for the big night. The students all looked stunning and their hard work paid off with perfectly choreographed dance moves.

Attendance

It is a requirement at Lilydale High School that students attend all timetabled classes so that teaching and learning opportunities can be maximised.

If students have reached their limit for absences from class,  there is an opportunity for this time to be redeemed. Students can speak to their Year Level Coordinator to discuss making this time up at lunchtime, during afternoon Study Periods or after school.

Furthermore, it is a requirement that students attend Home Group, even if they have Study Periods, Periods 1 and 2.

Approving Absences

Any absences from school must be parent/guardian approved – you can do this through a signed note or via the Parent Approval Button on Compass.

You can also use Compass to view your student’s past absences.
