Taking a Chance -

Leakhena Davison, 9D

One of my subjects at Lilydale High School is Year 9  Food Studies - Food Prep Skills. The second  'Work Requirement'  was to produce and decorate a 'Custard Sponge Cake'.

We came in at lunchtime and had just over an hour to assemble and decorate the cake. The cakes were filled with jam and cream and frosted with handmade butter cream. We were able to use food colouring to colour the butter cream.  My cake was pink and had mandalas pitied on top with flower sugar glass, chocolate covered strawberries and strawberry roses.

After school, when I was walking home, I walked past a bakery in Lilydale. For some reason, I walked in and looked around. Then I rushed out the door, walked down the street and sat down on a bench to call my dad.  I was filled with adrenaline and I told him what had happened. He reassured me and said “just walk in, the owner is a lovely guy and I think he will appreciate your effort”.

I walked in once again and asked for the owner. I told him what I made in class. I said, “I just wanted to show you my cake, I know this is really odd and I don't know what I'm doing”. The owner told me that I had a lot of courage coming in.

I talked to him about what I did in my spare time and how I enjoy cooking, especially painting and sculpting for cake decorating. He told me to come in on the Saturday, with a couple of photos of cakes I've  made, so he could show his co-owner.

As soon as I walked out, I called my dad and told him what had happened!  We both jumped around in joy and I almost started to cry, as I was so high on adrenaline.   When I called mum, she was also really excited for me.

That week, I was so nervous and I had compiled photos of different cakes I had made. It was hard to find things, because I'm not really the kind of person who shows off things, I'm somewhat of a quiet achiever, well most of the time.

I went to the bakery on Saturday and made three cakes.  One I decorated the way the owner wanted me to and the other two cakes, I got to decorate the way I wanted.   One of my cakes sold in two days for $45.  I worked five hours that day and it is now my second job.

I am 14 years old and I now get to practise my skills he taught me.  I especially love learning different cake decorating skills.

When my parents came to pick me up from the bakery, I could see how proud they were of me.

I now come in every Saturday and decorate cakes and bake amazing food.  I hope this can take me into a future career; it may not pay much money at the moment, but I'm there for the experience.
