Learning & Teaching

End of Semester News

Year 9 and 10 students completed exams in the core subjects – Religious Education, English, Maths, Science and Geography or History.  Sitting exams not only provides vital information for teachers but is also a way to practise the skill of sitting an exam.   There are many instances where exam style conditions are required in both study and employment situations.  We hope that the Year 9 students were not too nervous in this their first experience, and that they have reflected on what they might be able to improve on for the Semester 2 exam period.

Careers and Pathways

Year 9 and 10 students have taken part in activities, which centred on planning for their post-school futures.  Students in each of these year levels have begun a profile on the college careers website, and the aim is for this to inform their subject selections.  It is important for parents to note that in Years 9 and 10, boys should be encouraged to explore subjects that they enjoy and that they are show aptitude in.

Semester 2 Subjects

Semester 2 subjects began for all year levels on Tuesday June 12.  New timetables can be found on SIMON.  Opportunities to change electives in Years 9 and 10 were provided in late May and are now finalised.

Subject Selections for 2019

All Year 10 students wishing to continue on to Year 11 at St Bede’s College in 2019 are required to attend the Senior Pathways Evening on Tuesday 17 July, 2018.  This evening is designed to clarify the many options your son will face on entering post compulsory education. Topics for discussion will include subject selection for VCE, VCAL and Vocational Education and Training and other course options.  It is expected that at least one parent/carer from each family will attend with their son.

On this evening staff from each of the Learning Areas will be available to give subject advice and answer questions regarding their subject area.  This will provide an ideal opportunity for you and your son to discuss specific subject information with staff who actually teach in that subject area. Also on hand will be representatives from some of Victorian TAFEs and Universities to answer any questions regarding courses they offer.

The information sessions will take place in the St Bede’s College Lecture theatre, and the Subject and Pathway Expo will be in the Sports Centre. Please note that there are five information sessions to accommodate families. Details of the evening are as follows:

Acceleration Policy Reminder

A reminder to students, parents and carers that current Year 9 students who wish to accelerate into a Unit 1 and 2 VCE subject in Year 10 require 80% or above in 3 of their 5 core subjects.  Acceleration is not automatic even in these circumstances.  The College reserves the right to refuse based on Year 11 demand, literacy concerns and / or behavioural concerns.
