Fisher News - Semester Two

Learning Spaces

During the first semester, our Year 7 Leadership Team has developed an exciting, revamped Fisher 12. The team worked under budget constraints to create a flexible learning space that students, this year and for many years to come, can utilise as a break-out space from Fisher classrooms.

Modern furniture, benching along the window with high stools, large green screen, projector upgrade and in-built bluetooth speaker system are some of the changes that have happened. We are sure you'll agree that the students have done a magnificent job at creating a fantastic, modern learning space.

At the end of Term 2, work began on developing the Fisher Pergola too. The Fisher Team had the amazing support from John Maitland, George Constantinides, Anthony Fazzalari and Clive Berry to re-image the space to become an indoor/outdoor flexible learning environment. We thank these parents for their hard work and continued support with creating another inviting learning space.

The space has a large framed board ready for artwork creation, chalk and whiteboards for groupwork. Artificial grass has now been laid so that students can utilise the floor in the new break-out area. Additional improvements will include outside furniture and benching along the outer wall.

South Korean Homestay

During the first three weeks, we have had seven South Korean students visiting us. Adelaide hosted 100 students from 100 different South Korean schools. The students have stayed with Fisher families and have had an awesome time finding out about what life is like here! Some have said that they will definitely come back to Australia.

We organised visits to Latitude, Henley Beach, Glenelg, Rundle Mall (Where we bumped into a group of fellow South Korean students!) and Monarto Zoo to help the students to get to know each other, their homestay families and discover more about life and the history of South Australia.

On Monday 8th August, the Fisher team and parents organised an Aboriginal Experience with Trent Hill, which was hugely successful - the weather was very kind to us! We had a BBQ and fire pit while Trent shared Aboriginal dreaming stories and discussed tools and instruments.

It has been great to meet our visitors and we wish them much success for their futures. They will always be welcome at Lockleys North - safe trip home!

Camp

In Week 4 of Term 3, all Fisher students will be off on various camps.  These camps are designed to promote the values of persistence, resilience, organisation, getting along and confidence.  These core values are a necessary skill that students are always exposed to and instructed to develop throughout their years at LNPS.  Each camp will offer a variety of challenges that we hope students accept and take full advantage of.

The Year 5/6 camp is at El Shaddai campsite at Wellington, near Murray Bridge. The camp offers activities such as archery, a giant swing, canoeing, group initiatives and challenges, rock climbing and a vertical challenge.  Students will be involved in all activities while at the same time, working on group and individual skills.  A big thank you to parents who will lose sleep assisting Nat, Mike and Trent on camp.  This camp has been fondly remembered by the current Year 7 students who regularly reference El Shaddai in their Year 7 Graduate Speeches.

This year our Year 7 camp is at Douglas Scrub & Kuitpo Forest, near McLaren Flat. The programme has been designed to introduce and develop students' skills in light weight camping and bushwalking through an overnight expedition into the forest and other outdoor activities, such as mountain biking and a great high ropes course.

Students will be working in small groups for the duration of the camp and will be cooking their food within in their groups over a 24 hour period. Hopefully these cooking skills can be of use when back at home! They will spend 2 nights sleeping in 2-3 person tents, 1 night  at  the base camp at Douglas Scrub and 1 night  on expedition in Kuitpo Forest. The students will benefit from the presence of one of our parents who is an experienced mountain biker. Mirjana, Kim and Anton are really looking forward to this rewarding camping experience.

Robotics

In Week 4, 56 year 5/6 students will be visiting Underdale High School to participate in a Robotics Workshop.  This unique and challenging workshop enables the students to work with NXT Robots, programming and building using light, ultrasonic and touch sensors. Students will aim to achieve set learning objectives to enable them to compete in a SUMO Robots competition. This is an excellent opportunity for students to undertake a course that incorporates coding, programming and engineering principles. It also ties in nicely with what the students are investigating in Science.

Bookweek

Each year, across Australia, The Children's Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week. This year Book Week will be celebrated from the 20th -26th August. Each year the celebration centres on a theme with this year's being : Australia! Story Country.

This year the two major, whole school events will include the Book Week Parade on Monday, 22nd August at 9:00 am and R-7 elective groups on Wednesday, 24th August between 1:30 and 2:45 pm.  The inspiration for our LNPS Book Week electives comes from the nominated Early Childhood Book of the Year: Ollie and the Wind.

Science Week

In Science this term, our focus will be on Earth & Space Sciences. We will be exploring our solar system, natural disasters and the seasons. We will also be continuing with Robotics and expanding our skills in programming. As part of our learning this term, we will be having the Skywatch MirrorDome visiting LNPS which provides curriculum based astronomy education in a portable planetarium using a 360 degree movie theatre. The MirrorDome provides a realistic display of the sky using latest digital technologies. This incursion will be a highly valuable experience for our students, as it provides them with an unforgettable multi-media experience that will ignite their curiosity and extend their astronomy knowledge.

Festival of Music Performance

The Festival of Music has been a long term part of South Australian culture and now stands as an official State icon. Our school has a long, successful history of involvement in the Festival of Music choir, with successive groups achieving front row positions as well as many individual roles of honour including comperes, troupe members and soloists.

The Lockleys North Festival Choir in 2016 is a dedicated group who meet each Monday morning to rehearse 15 songs in preparation for the Festival of Music. This year they will be performing at the Festival Theatre on the evening of Tuesday, 20th September.

Tickets for our Festival Theatre performance can be ordered via BASS. We would love to see you there!

Premier's Be Active Challenge

In the year of the Olympics our students have a chance to receive their own medals!

The Challenge

To be physically active for 60 min a day (R-7 students), for 5 days a week, for at least 4 weeks, in order to earn a medal. Activities are many and varied. Recess and lunch play can be included as well as any other physical activities that are undertaken at school or outside of school. Online recording is once again available to students this year. Students may choose to use pedometers to count their steps.

The challenge closes on the last day of this term (Sep 30th), so students can complete the PBAC for up to 9 weeks, if they wish.

So take the Challenge and reap the rewards!

Swimming

Year 5 and 6 students will participate in swimming lessons during Term 4. Lessons have been booked in for 7th November to 11th November (Term 4, Week 4). Total cost for the swimming lessons and transport will be $33.
