CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

Throughout the curriculum students will be introduced to the lessons via LEARNING INTENTIONS. These provide the students with a clear focus of the learning intended. They are introduced to the intention as either: a skill, knowledge or understanding. Students are expected to address SUCCESS CRITERIA in order to maximise their learning outcomes. Students will continue to receive feedback to assist with their goal setting and continued improvement with achievement.

MATHEMATICS

This term, Fisher classes will be focusing on the Measurement and Geometry Strand of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. The measurement and geometry strand involves students using units of measurement, exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, describing and creating patterns in location and transformation, and defining and classifying in geometric reasoning. Students will connect decimal representations to the metric system and choose appropriate units of measurement to solve problems. They will measure, identify, name and compare angles and their properties in particular shapes. They will investigate combinations of transformations and enlargements. Students will classify triangles and quadrilaterals and establish the formulas for the area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles. They will calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and draw and build three dimensional objects. During the term  some Year 6 students identified as high achievers in Mathematics will be participating in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

ENGLISH

This will incorporate, Writing, Vocabulary development, Reading and Viewing and, Listening and Speaking. During this time students will learn how to use the English language to effectively communicate for a variety of purposes.

Spelling

Spelling workshops will continue over 3 sessions per week. Students attend workshops targeted to their needs. Learning will involve developing strategies and knowledge around how to study words to enhance spelling ability.

n addition, within class, students focus on vocabulary development and the four general spelling knowledges: Phonological, Visual, Morphemic and Etymological to build their understanding of how to spell unfamiliar words, to build up their word bank and to make their vocabulary more precise.

Reading

Comprehension strategies are vital to students’ success in all areas of the curriculum. Students will engage in many different reading activities in order to strengthen their abilities to make connections with ‘HERE’, ‘HIDDEN’ and ‘HEAD’ information. (Ask your child about this terminology!). Responding to class novels or shared texts provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their new learning and deeper understanding.

Listening and Speaking

LISTENING AND SPEAKING skills will be developed through class participation, assembly presentations, Year 7 speeches and scheduled planned oral presentations.

Writing

Writing will have a focus on exploring Exposition text types which will support our Geography Inquiry unit for the term. Students also have the opportunity to regularly express their ideas and work on specific aspects of their writing through regular Ten Minute Writing tasks. Proof reading and editing written work will also be a focus with the expectation that students take greater ownership and responsibility with this.

All of the various skills and outcomes covered in the English program have application across all curriculum areas.
