Year 10 Orientation Camp

YEAR 10 CAMP

In my attempt to summarise year 10 Camp, a million emotions were packed into only a few words. Camp was an experience that will stay with the Year 10 cohort until we graduate and beyond. It provided the initial foundation to many life-long friendships and student support groups. Through physical activities we got to know a range of new people and apply and develop our teamwork skills. Learning to thrive in a new environment is something that requires adaption and the Year 10 Camp gave us to opportunity to adjust to life at JMSS. We attended talks and lectures to open our minds to new learning techniques and ways to maintain concentration. These were informative and new learning for many of us.

Now let’s not dismiss the food. I’m sure if you asked anyone on the camp, they would reassure you that the meals at the Monash University residence are some of the best camp meals ever. It provided the sustenance we needed to keep our minds alive and our imaginations exploring new things. Because if it’s one thing we learned, John Monash Science School is a place of not only thinkers, but of dreamers.

THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR SINGLE USE!

John Monash Science School has a vision to become single use plastic-free by 2020. We are a small ambassador team of passionate year 10 and 11 students who are working with Plastic Oceans Australasia Foundation. With the help of the Plastic Oceans Australasia School Coordinator Stephanie Karras, we are investigating the plastic habits of our school and generating innovative and effective ideas that we will put in place to become totally single use plastic-free. We want to do this to eliminate our contributions to the global plastic problem which is having and will continue to have devastating effects on all aspects of the environment. By making these changes we hope to inspire other schools around the country to join us on the journey to kick single use plastics out! The mission of the ambassador’s program will only be viable with the support and participation of the whole of school community - that is you, the students, the staff and the families. Watch this space for how you can get involved! For further information on the program please contact stephanie@plasticoceans.org.au
