The Arts at Oakleigh Grammar

Year 7 Visual Art

This semester Year 7 students learned about the art movement, Impressionism. Not only did they

gain new skills in colour mixing and broken colour painting techniques, but they also learned about the historic and cultural contexts from which Impressionism emerged during the Industrial Revolution in Europe.

Impressionism marked the definitive beginnings of Modern Art and the avant-garde in the Modernist era, which transformed Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Students developed skills of analysis when responding to artworks, and have extended their vocabulary as part of their reflective writing tasks in their visual diary. The practical component involved painting on canvas. For some students, it was the first time they had painted on canvas in this way, which they found challenging but rewarding. Many of their paintings reference Claude Monet’s Houses of Parliament and Haystack series.

Monet painted en plein air (outdoors) during different times of day, seasons and weather that produced varied effects of light and colour. The artworks are currently on display in the Arts corridor and will be showcased as part of this year’s Art Show in September, so watch this space.

Year 8 Media

For Year 8 Media students, their semester of studies culminated into a Media product; a one minute video advertisement created in small collaborative groups. Prior to this production exercise, students analysed a film in great depth. They learned how representations of social values and points of view are portrayed. They also evaluated media products, genre, technical and symbolic elements.

Developing their ideas involved design and production processes such as research, storyboards and script writing. Students had become all too aware of understanding the importance of post-production editing by the end of the unit, and will no doubt grow from these experiences. Please enjoy the three examples presented to you here. Students involved are attributed in the end credits.
