DeakInspire 2018

DeakInspire, is an event specially designed to inspire, motivate and engage students in Years 10, 11 and 12. DeakInspire will provide students with a head-start on their study and personal career goals.

Change the World with Engineering and IT at Monash

Monash University will be hosting a fun and inspiring workshop for Year 10 girls – ENGenuITy – Change the World with Engineering and IT. Students will hear stories from women who have been successful in engineering and IT, and students will also get to build and code their own robot. This is a free event, and morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Oakleigh Grammar always support fundraisers organised by students and staff. Raising money for different organisations throughout the year is a fun activity for student leaders, who have the opportunity to work as a team and try to achieve their goals!

On Tuesday 19th June, the SRC will be holding their annual Red Nose Day to raise funds for SIDS and Kids. Students are asked to come to school in comfortable casual clothes and wear an element of red to highlight the importance of this worthwhile charity. Each student will be asked to donate $2.00 for the casual day.

Alternatively, ELC and Junior School students can pay $3.00 and also receive a red nose. We are looking forward to seeing students and staff in their red outfits!

After our annual “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” fundraiser on Thursday 24th May, we would like to announce that we raised $1,440 for the Cancer Foundation! Thanks to all the students and staff who participated this year!

G.A.T.E.WAYS REPORT

Recently a few of our Year 1 and 2 students attended a G.A.T.E.WAYS workshop on ‘Equations that Changed the World’ at St Kevin’s School.

The students explored some important maths equations from Pythagoras to Albert Einstein and beyond, on laying the foundation for how we measure and understand our universe.

Below are their recounts of the day:

You had to draw a letter without taking your pencil off the pages. We explored 3D shapes and we figured out what numbers and shapes go in the box.

Pythagoras had to work out which triangle would fit the paddock space for the ponies and the pig to not escape to eat the pumpkins. We used mathematical formulas to work it out. It was fun as we got to solve the problem.

I enjoyed using Napier’s Rod to solve 53x8. I was trying to draw the house without taking my pencil off the page. We made pyramids by cutting dotted lines up to the middle.

George Filis 1Z

We used Napier’s Rod to multiply large numbers to help you find the answers to problems. It was easy. I also made new friends.

Junior School Lunchtime Dance Club

During Wednesday lunchtimes, Junior School students enjoy learning new dance moves. From modern dance clips and hip hop to salsa and line dancing on the big screen, they're having a lot of fun with Ms Susie Atherinos, our dance facilitator.

Every year, during May, Cretan compatriots and the wider Greek Community of Melbourne commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Crete. This is a significant event of great importance to both Australia and Greece. During World War II Greek patriots and ANZAC fought side by side against an invading Fascist army.

Three different events were organised this year for the commemoration of the 77th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete, and our students attended all of them.

On Friday 25th May, the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemorative Council in conjunction with the Ballarat RSL Sub Branch honoured for the first time all the ANZAC, Greece and Crete Prisoners of War, with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the National Prisoners of War Memorial in the City of Ballarat. The Junior School choir was invited to attend the event, and performed the Greek and the Australian National Anthems.

Students had the opportunity to meet with Mr Bill Bahr, Chairman for the Trustees, who donated two books to our library to show his appreciation to our school for attending the event.

On Saturday 26th May, Senior and Middle School Leaders, SRC Representatives and Unit 3 LOTE Modern Greek students represented our School at the commemoration. Students attended the parade of community schools, organisations and veteran units at the Shrine of Remembrance. Our school drummers had the honour to open the parade this year. After the parade a Wreath Laying ceremony was conducted where Evangelia Demirgelis and Panagiotis Savva laid a wreath on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar.

On Sunday 27th May, Efthymia Delichristou and Alexandra Konstantinidis represented our School by attending the Doxology at St Eustathios church in South Melbourne.

On Monday 28th May, we had an official visit from the Hellenic Armed Forces. Lieutenant General Nikolaos-Dimitrios Christopoulos, Chief of Staff of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, and Major Nikolaos Gogousis, Public Relations Directorate of the HNDGS, visited Oakleigh Grammar, where they had the opportunity to meet with the Leadership Team as well as with Mr Sardellis, President of the Board of Governance, and Father George Adamakis. Students had also the great honour of meeting the Officials and talking about their future plans.

On behalf of Oakleigh Grammar, we would like to congratulate the Battle of Crete and Greece Commemoration Council, and especially thank Chairman Mr Tsourdalakis and the Secretary Mr Jim Papadimitriou for this year's commemorative events. Congratulations to all students who represented our school.

BYZANTINE CHOIR of Oakleigh Grammar

As part of our Byzantine Choir program at the School, students participating in the program have been bestowed the honour of chanting at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on our Feast Day of The Holy Unmercenary Kosmas and Damianos on Sunday July 1st.

Students are expected to be at church by 8.45am in full school winter uniform. To ensure our students are well prepared for this auspicious occasion Father George will be hosting in-school and after school practices in the lead up to these events.

For over 2,700 years, Greek has been spoken in Southern Italy, a place known historically as Magna Graecia due to the ancient and Byzantine Greek settlements and cities. In recent centuries, the number of those identifying as “Greek” has declined, in keeping with the dwindling numbers of those speaking the language of the Grecanica people in Calabria.

Currently a few of the young people can speak Greko, and it seems that the dialect would probably be at an end within two generations. Of the 35,000 people who identified as being Greek, perhaps half can speak or understand the Greko language, mostly older people.

Year 8 and Year 6 LOTE Greek students were asked to write some letters to those young children who identify themselves as “Greek”, and encouraged them to continue to speak the language. We sent the letters to Southern Italy through Mr Bill Cotsis, who is currently visiting the villages.

This was an amazing activity for our students who realized that Greek is spoken not only in Greece, but in many places. Students also saw why it is important to continue learning the language of their heritage.

On Friday 1st June, Year 8 LOTE Greek students visited the Parliament House after completing the topics on friendship and family, and discussing their heritage. Students had the opportunity to meet Mr Murry Thompson, State Member for Sandringham. Mr Thompson, who is also part of the Victorian Parliamentary Greece Friendship Group, surprised the students by talking to them in Greek! Students were very impressed with the Parliament House as they saw Hellenic architecture has a big influence in the building.
