I am curious and apply my skills

Science

#Idiscover

It has been an exciting start to the year in Early Years Science! Each Mellor class attends Science for two lessons each week with Miss Stirling. In the first two weeks, I have focussed on building my creative thinking and problem solving skills through STEM challenges. I am developing my skills in teamwork. We have begun our first topic for the year and are looking at Materials in the Chemical Sciences strand of the Australian Curriculum. This topic will develop my understanding of the properties of materials and how materials can change through engaging, inquiry based learning experiences.

Maths

I participate in a mental routine to help me to use mathematical language.

I use the STAR problem solving method (Sort out, Think about, Action and Reflect) to help me apply strategies and understanding to solve problematised situations and to consider the accuracy and efficiency of my method.

I use concrete materials and games to inquire into mathematical concepts.

I reflect on my learning and discuss it with others.

English

I inquire into different genres and their features.

I am learning to write procedures, narrative retells and personal recounts.

I read every day at home and at school to discover new stories and ideas and to learn about things that interest me.

I think about what I am reading and whether it makes sense.

I retell what I am reading and make inferences and predictions to deepen my understanding.

HASS

I am inquiring into how technology has changed our lives.

I talk to people I know about technology in their life.

I compare technology in the past to technology now and make predictions about the future.

German

In German lessons, students use language in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition.  They exchange greetings and information making connections between English and German.  Students will learn with two puppets, characters visiting from Germany, Felix (a frog) and Franzi (a duck). A range of learning experiences will allow students to gain confidence using the language.

Knowing about language and relating it to the students own experiences helps them to make connections that link to every day literacy.  Words can look similar but sound different, questions marks are used, nouns have capital letters in German.  Language learning also lends itself to cultural awareness making comparisons not only with Australia and Germany but also  individual student's cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Please encourage your child(ren) to tell you about what they have been learning in German. See what they can teach you!
