I have a healthy mind and body

Our Learning spaces at Lockleys North Primary School support the development of the whole child - providing a safe, nurturing environment where all children feel valued. Our environments give children opportunities to express their feelings and emotions through  purposeful play based programs. Children are given strategies to deal with their feelings in a constructive way, learning how to get along with others in supportive situations. Common language is used across the school by staff and students to support children to be successful at identifying  A (strong) and B (weak) choices. Respect underpins all that we do and it is vital that children respect themselves for learning to evolve. Once this is embedded, children learn how to respect others, our school and our wider community.

Students will engage in regular physical activity to develop their fundamental movement skills. These skills enable children to participate successfully in all types of games, physical activities and sports. The development of fundamental movement skills is an important step towards ensuring lifelong involvement in physical activity. Without proficiency in skills like throwing, catching, kicking, leaping and balancing, students are less likely to explore the range of options available to them to establish and maintain active lifestyles.

Students will be focussing on resilience and team work in Physical Education. With Sports Day approaching on Thursday 29th March (Week 9), it is important that children understand how to participate in the activities that they will be undertaking on the day and feel confident in their abilities. From time to time, additional sporting clinics will be conducted by visiting specialist sports development officers.

Children will be encouraged to support each other and extend themselves out of their comfort zone in order to develop new skills. They will be learning social skills such as turn taking, sharing, encouragement, positive communication and listening through their participation in many team building games.

HEALTHY EATING

Children are encouraged to bring a small piece of fruit, vegetable or cheese to support our daily healthy eating program. We encourage children to be a part of choosing and preparing their healthy snack each morning, fostering their independence.

Relaxation is an essential part of a busy day in Mellor. After lunch, all children are involved in relaxation for a duration of 15 to 20 minutes. This is a peaceful time for children to listen to their bodies and practise relaxation techniques to relax the muscles and calm the nervous system. Tranquil music and guided relaxation programs support children to become successful at relaxation, what it looks like, feels like and sounds like. It gives children an opportunity to visualise, using their vivid imaginations to paint a picture in their mind. A great technique to try before bedtime!
