Shrine of Remembrance Excursion

Shrine of Remembrance

The recent 8B and 9C Humanities excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance was simply amazing.

In Humanities, we are currently studying World War I and are undertaking an inquiry into commemorating the end of WWI.

At the Shrine of Remembrance we took part in the Keepsakes Guided Tour where we were able to use real artefacts to consider the Australian experience of WWI.  So informative was the guide that an hour-and-a-half was merely a taster of what can be discovered.

The displays and presentations were excellent, and the tour guide that led 8B through the “Hall of Columns” was  fantastic during his explanation of displays and objects.

Many subjects, from the Gallipoli campaign to the Western Front were covered. Some of these exhibits were of actual objects such as a row-boat used for transporting soldiers that survived Gallipoli and other exhibits were pictures of people and their stories such as the experience of Indigenous soldiers.

If only we had more time…

But transportation aside, for those who study or enjoy reading/writing/talking about war related subjects, a visit of the Shrine, even if only ever done once, is highly recommended, as the stories and images presented are some of the most incredible on this planet.

On Monday 22nd May 8B and 9C went to the Shrine of Remembrance, and it was such a fantastic experience. We were split off into groups and had a tour guide showing us the sections of the memorial dedicated to World War 1.

They told us stories about Australian people serving in the war, like Rachel Pratt, a nurse who was 1 of 7 Australian women to win the 'Military Medal' for bravery under fire, and multiple soldiers and their conditions during and after the war.

Overall, it was such an interesting and educational experience and we ended the tour by paying our respects at the sanctuary.
