News and Reminders from your Pastoral Leaders.
General School News
- This week is Reconciliation Week. There will be a range of activities happening throughout the week and a whole school assembly to acknowledge this hugely important week.
- Congratulations to all athletes that represented TCS at the recent Peninsula Cross Country trial at Yungaburra.
- As we round the halfway mark for the term and students start booking in haircuts, it is a timely reminder to all families to review the College’s grooming requirements (found here). Students with unsuitable haircuts will be asked to go back to a hairdresser to have them fixed up.
- All are welcome to attend the next Family Connect Meeting on Monday 29 May, 5:30pm in the Hugh O’Brien Centre. Have your say as we make decisions about the Parent evenings and events we will be holding this year.
- Thank you to students who have been dismounting their bikes, scooters etc as they enter the College grounds. This helps to keep everyone on our grounds safe
- We are still seeing some families use the Trade Training Centre car park as a drop off zone. This places other carpark users and pedestrians at risk. Please use the stop drop and go zone at the front of the school, allowing enough time to get through the traffic there.
- The Non State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme assists eligible families with the cost of travelling to school, with applications for Semester 1 2023 now open online and will close on 31 May. Student travel rebate applications are only open in May for Semester 1 and October for Semester 2. Please visit: SchoolTransport.com.au first to check if you are eligible. Please see below for further details.

- Congratulations to those students who have made the mixed All Schools Touch Team and the representatives in the colleges Bill Turner Soccer Team who achieved victory in the most recent match.
- During SEL last week, students participated in a lesson that focused on managing situations that can cause emotional spirals and escalations. Discussions and collaboration among students was positive and productive.
- To ensure the safety of all students, parents, staff and visitors, bikes and scooters need to be walked into and out of the College grounds.

- All students are required to take the college diary to every class. The purpose of the diary is to improve organisational skills, keep a record of learning activities and to communicate homework activities.
- During SEL last week students and staff looked at the benefits of positive emotions and strategies that we could apply to foster mental and physical health.
- Due to safety concerns students are reminded that all bikes and scooters are to be walked in and out of the college grounds.

Year 9
- Well done to all students who participated in the Peninsular Cross Country! Also a big congratulation to Year 9 students who made it into the SMCC All Schools Touch Football Tour!
- This week in Social Emotional Learning we discussed different ways people approach their goals. We identified that working on mastering a skill will provide better long-term habits which will increase the chances of achieving their goals. Mastering skills can be things like:
- Organising set time to do assessment, homework and/or revision
- Trial different modes of learning to help understand content. E.g. research or watch informative videos on the topic.
- Reminder parents to provide a note if tyour child is in the wrong uniform. This can be written on a piece of paper or in the student’s diary.

Year 10
- SEL last week focussed on developing skills to overcome procrastination. With so many distractions constantly interrupting productivity and focus, one popular strategy that was explored was the Pomodoro Technique.
- To ensure the safety of all students, parents, staff and visitors, bikes and scooters need to be walked into and out of the College grounds.
- Students last week were reminded to secure valuables in their locked lockers rather than in school bags. In addition, students were informed that loitering around lockers outside of designated times, will result in a consequence being issued.

Year 11
- “If you look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you go good”. This was the message from our Deputy Principal last week in the Newsletter referring to uniform and personal grooming. I would like to thank all Yr11 students for looking smart and working hard.
- In SEL this week, we looked at different styles of leadership and reflected upon our own style. We all have skills and potential. I would encourage all students to take a moment to reflect upon their abilities and what they could bring to our Community to ensure success.
- Leadership positions are now open for nominations, please use the application guidelines emailed to you. Interviews will commence in Week 10 of Term 2.

Year 12
- A gentle reminder to students, when riding bikes, scooters or e-scooters to school, these must be walked when on school grounds. The safety of everyone is paramount.
- Any academic concerns, please contact your classroom teacher. Staff contacts can be found on the school website. https://www.smcc.qld.edu.au/our-college/our-staff/teachers/
- As academic pressure begins to ramp up, it is a good time to start having family discussions about what next year holds. Having a target in mind can help motivate you when the going gets tough. If students need some ideas or advice regarding courses to study for next year, students are reminded that they can make an appointment with Ms Rebecca Ambrose (Careers Counsellor) to discuss pathway options.
- Students are reminded that when they are in their vehicles, road rules still apply - even when in the student car park. Under no circumstances should drivers be using phones and drivers must ensure a safe distance is maintained between vehicles
