Year Advisers Reports

Years 8, 10 & 12

Year 8 have had a great start to Term 2. They look well rested after the Easter Break and ready to get back into learning. It looks as though new friendship groups have been formed, and as a cohort they are looking stronger than ever. We have a few events to look forward to this term. Last year we were such a strong cohort in the Athletics Carnival and I can't wait to watch us dominate again this year!

I would like to commend the students who performed at OnTrack, it was an amazing night and the performers were outstanding. Seems as though we have many talented musicians amongst us. Below you can see Kairavan Selvarajan ready to rock and roll for his performance.

I'd like to give a shout out to Henry McGavin and Tycen Bedford who participated in the Anzac Day March in Gosford. The boys represented not only Henry Kendall proudly, but also our year group. I would also like to give recognition again to Kairavan who played the trumpet at our school Anzac Day assembly.

Just a reminder this term is going to be a wild one for assessment tasks due to it being the term Year 8 will receive reports for. Try to stay well prepared and ensure you ask your teachers if there is anything you are unsure of, we are lucky here at Henry Kendall High School that the teachers are willing to spend time with you to ensure you are well prepared for assessment tasks. Best of luck with them all.

Term 2 has already been a very busy term for Year 10. For many students there have been many mid-term assessment tasks with some learning the skill of balancing 2 or more assessments at once. There has also been sporting, academic, and music commitments. A special mention goes too our Girls Volleyball Team, Debaters, Public Speakers, Chess Players and all the Musicians who performed at OnTrack.

I would like to welcome our new students and their families to the school this term: Samin Ahmed and Tristian Selecios. They are both settling in very well.

The second half of the term is also bringing lots of activity and opportunities for Year 10. In Week 6 we have our school Athletics Carnival and then in Week 8 students will attend Stand Tall. Both of those opportunities give students a chance to be part of the school community out of the classroom.

Stand Tall is an annual event where students across the state come together hear amazing stories that provide hope and inspiration from talks and music. Each year Henry Kendall High School are given the opportunity to take 100 Year 10 students to this amazing event. Last year I was lucky to go with the Year 10 and their Year Adviser Ms Reynen, and at the end of the day I was excited to be able to give my year this fantastic opportunity.

As well as these two events, Year 10 are also starting to think about their pathway after they have finished Stage 5. There will be two pathway information nights to help students with the decisions that are ahead of them.

The first on Thursday 1 June: this night is an Information Evening that will focus on the discussion of individual student pathway options that are available at our school for 2024/2025. The second night on Thursday 15 June, is where students can discuss with different faculties the courses that are on offer and answer any questions.  Course selections will be available on Friday 16 June.

This time can be very stressful for many students, who have many concerns and questions on which courses are best suited for them and the chosen field they are thinking of going into once leaving school. I have already had several conversations with many students. The best advice I can give to all students is remember that you will be doing most of these subjects for two years – choose what you are interested in and cater to your strengths! Stage 6 is a lot of work, and will come with its many challenges but if you are choosing a pathway that is best for you, it will help.

Please remember at any time, not just when choosing your electives, you have an amazing community to help you. Your teachers, student services and myself are here to support you through schooling life. Reach out when things are getting tough or you just need a chat.

Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don't know something, and to learn something new. Barack Obama

Year 12 are halfway through their penultimate term of school! This is both an exciting and daunting fact, for all of us.

As always, the term has begun busy with one of the best nights of the year: OnTrack! This one was bittersweet as it was the last one for Year 12, who were absolutely the stars of the show. We were treated to a significant number of performances by the Year 12 Music students, who blew everyone away with their incredible skills. We’ll all be asking for their autographs now before they’re famous musicians.

Coming up, we have two massive BBQs in three days; one is a Bunnings sausage sizzle at West Gosford on Saturday 27 May and the other is at the Athletics Carnival on Monday 29 May. This is also going to be their last sports carnival, so I’m sure the year group will have some awesome costumes and have a wonderful time.

In exciting academic news, the Year 12 half yearly reports are available for viewing. It was a pleasure reading through all of the comments from the teachers conveying their appreciation of the students in their classes. The Stage 6 Parent Teacher night on the Tuesday 6  June, so this will be a wonderful last chance to speak to your child’s teachers in person. We look forward to seeing you there!
