Year Advisers Report

Years 7, 9 & 11

Year 7 have had a settled start to Term Two. The team environment we created at Camp last term, has been brought into Term Two as we work towards being a cohesive group built on our five key principles:

Empathy, Teamwork, Resilience, Responsibility and Gratitude

The term has begun with some key events in the calendar. This week Year 7 have had the opportunity to partake in two important days, the Careers Day and the Wellbeing Day. We have also seen some of our Year 7 students receive awards at our first celebration assembly of the term!

The Careers Day was an opportunity for students to participate in three workshops that provided an opportunity for them to try out different career paths. The workshops focus areas were podcasting, drama activities and production of resources. These activities created opportunities for the students to work together and work towards common goals, as well having fun throughout the day.

The Wellbeing Day was a fantastic day that Year 7 participated in. Year 7 began the day with a Celebration Assembly, which set the positive tone for the day as some of our students received awards for their consistent efforts in the classroom.

In session two, they had the opportunity to witness a presentation from Life Choices. The program was delivered by Brett Murray, Australian of the Year Nominee, former State Champion Boxer and State level competitor of five different sporting disciplines. Brett uses his life experiences to focus on the topic of bullying.

Session three focused on positive uses of social media with clear links to the Resilience in our Teens Program from Term One. Session four and five were the fun sessions for the day, with students having the opportunity to partake in some outside team building games as well as trivia. This was an extremely beneficial day for our year group and highlighted some of the main issues we are currently having as a group and ones we need to continue working towards. Students are encouraged to take in all the information they received on the day and use this in positive decision making in the remainder of 2023.

In Week 6, we have our Henry Kendall High School Athletics Carnival. Students are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability on the day and immerse themselves in the spirit of the day by wearing their house colours. Each event that students participate in, brings points towards their house total.

I look forward to working with Year 7 in the remainder of Term Two and beyond in 2023.

We’d like to wish Mr Newton all the best in his new role in Victoria and thank him for all his support over the last three years. While we’re sad to see Mr Newton go, we’re excited to announce that the new Year 9 Advisers are us! We’re excited to take over and work with you all. Both Ms Diterlizzi and Mrs Bailey live in the English staffroom, buried beneath books and Harry Potter memorabilia.

What a great start to Term 2! We had four students receive a bronze award at the Celebration Assembly for earning a massive 50 Sentral points. Well done Evgenii, Jasper, Jemimah and William!

This term we also saw a number of Year 9 students take the stage in OnTrack performances. Well done to Ava, Charlie, Jhalaena, Elise, Ella, Evgenii, Felix, Isla, Jayden, Lachlan, Marnie, Maxwell, Nicholas, Ryan, Thomas and William. You all did an incredible job and had us all tapping a foot, nodding a head and singing along!

Congratulations also to Sophie Chalker, a junior member of the Girls Volleyball Team who are performing extremely well on the court and Aaron Houweling and Richard Pollard who represented Henry Kendall High School at the Central Coast Schools Chess Competition. It is great seeing some of our Year 9's involved in various extra curricular activities around the school.

Year 9 Advisers

Year 11 have settled straight back into the flow of Term 2. Although a stressful end to Term 1 with a multitude of assessment tasks, they have demonstrated excellent perseverance. This week means we are officially halfway through Year 11. Wow time flies when having fun.

On Wednesday 17 May, I had the privilege to attend Henry Kendall High Schools annual OnTrack event at the Entertainment Grounds. A number of students from across the school performed many musical items and showed their musical talent. Year 11 were proudly represented by Anjie Mesina, Luci Peck, Oskar Altena and accompanied by Mr Sainty. The trio opened Act 2 and preformed a fabulous rendition of Fire to the Rain by Adele. Anjie on vocals, Luci on guitar and Oskar on drums, performed so well even with 2 of them not feeling the greatest. Congratulations!!

A few students have asked How do I study? While there is no definitive answer because everyone is different. Here is a tip to try and help.

DON’T JUST RE-READ BUT STUDY

When you are reading and re-reading texts and notes, you’re not studying. This is because you’re not engaging with the material. You’ll discover that you have trouble remembering class notes if you’re not using active studying techniques. Instead of reading, try:

  • creating concept maps and diagrams.
  • explaining concepts to yourself step by step.
  • formulating questions and problems that you can come back to and solve, effectively creating a quiz for yourself.
  • becoming a teacher or tutor to your study group or partner and learning the course material by explaining concepts to them.

There are a couple of upcoming events:

  • Athletics Carnival Monday 29 May (Week 6) at Mingara Regional Athletics Centre.      Year 11's 2nd last Athletics Carnival!!
  • Stage 6 Parent Teacher Interviews Tuesday 6 June from 4.00pm-7.00pm.

Remember Year 11, try your best, be kind to yourself and others and never forget-

“Self-belief is the secret to success”.
